Metroid: Other M will be released June 27, 2010. The article also says that there'll be a gameplay session at the event later today, so there'll be a bit more to talk about then when we finally see what the game plays like.
Thread title:
Maybe I can get it for my birthday in July. It would save me having to buy it, and I can focus on getting a car.

Dammit, I need an EU release date!

About damn time. There had better be footage.

Nintendo's policy of announcing release dates a few monmths before the game's release is serious business. well, better to have it sooner than later.

"Metroid™: Other M, the incredible new Metroid game developed for Wii through a collaboration by Nintendo and the world-renowned Team Ninja, launches June 27. The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran's past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote™ controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages."

this sounds a lot like super paper mario but much better since the endless dialogue from SPM isn't here and the gameplay from 2D Metroid games is quite fast. seems that they stuck between 2D and 3D 3rd person instead of going full 3rd person.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely

You presume much.

Oh God, please keep the endless, clicky, pointless dialogue from Other M.

That sounds complicated.

it sounds like a bizarre concept, if the levels are designed for 2D play then I'm not sure how well switching to first person at any time is gonna work. guess it could with some good level design and execution. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.
Indie Lover
look at the new images! the game is not sidescroller, nad appears to be more of a topside view as seen in  the images perhaps the camera will change from place to place...

i am loving it! YES! no sidescroller!!!
red chamber dream
who said it was a sidescroller in the first place? the demo vid had both first-person and third-person views, only one of which resembled sidescrolling.

PiccoloCube's post in this topic.  I'm not sure where he found it.

EDIT: The screenshots on this page make it more clear.  It looks like it'll be a sidescroller with minimal depth, so you can move toward and away from the camera just a little.  I think you'll be able to switch to first-person and move around like in Metroid Prime here, with a wall or something on the side closer to the sidescroller camera.

EDIT2: It also looks like there will be certain sections where the sidescrolling is replaces by a third person 3D perspective.
