I've watched Biosparks SS speedrun a few times and am using it at a guide.  This will be my first time trying seriously for speed in any Metroid game, actually.  I've already done 1% and 10% in ZM, but my times were never anything to write home about.  I'm no expert.

I loved sess's 1% run and Biosparks any%, and those vids got me onto this in the first place, to try and get better with speed.

I just got to TRO and the clock literally just hit 8 minutes as I got on the initial save point.  In the current vid it's hard to tell if I'm on track because the vid time and game time are obviously not the same.  I was pretty much able to do the main deck and SRX just as in the vid, except the initial platform walljumps in the first shaft (wasn't able to do the last jump, so I cut it short halfway up).

Is 8 min good for getting to TRO?  I know it's literally 8 because it was 7 just as I got to the TRO Nav room and 8 by the time I saved just afterwards.

So am I on track, and anyone have any other specific advice besides what's in the vid?

btw, there are several times when Biospark pauses, and refers to it as possibly cheap in his sparse commentary.  I hate to sound silly, but I didn't get what he was doing.  Or why it was cheap.  Anyone know what all those pauses were?
Thread title:
i'm not sure what time it should be, but i think 7 sounds right.

basically, the pauses were so i could get more thinking time. i did it in serris to see where it was going, and i did it a few other times to avoid enemies (but i think i ended up hitting them).
Oh wow hi.  Nice run.  As to the pauses, why would that be cheap?

Also, I forgot to ask what I should be shooting for in TRO.  In my first few practice tries I'm getting out of there (arriving at the initial AQA save point) with 13 on the clock.  Can I do better than 5 min in that section, do you think?

Also, I'm not trying to do anything more than sub-1hr.
i'm pretty bad with times, because i haven't done much with segmented runs lately. tro is kinda hard, but i think it can be done in about 4 minutes. i'm not completely sure on that.

hopefully i can get this 1% ss going because it's going to be way more impressive than my any%.
Well, I just got to ARC for the first time with the clock just hitting 24.  The vid is very helpful, I know I'm no where near on track for 0:48, but I think I may be on time for under 1 hr.  What do you think?

btw, are you almost done with the 1% run?
i don't know what to think, just practice i guess.

the 1% is single-segment, so it'll only take one day (if i get around to it).
Two things:

1) Speaking of practice, I totally just ruined my save.  After finishing the meltdown, I saved then did practice up until returning to the ship.  Being the genius that I am, I was hammering A for the dialogue, forgetting the save prompt in the ship.

Since I spend alot of that practice repeating myself and faffing about, I lost at least 5 minutes.  I am sure my goal must be impossible now (39 min at the ship save point).

I'm just gonna call this whole run practice and try again later, but this is kinda disheartening :(

2) I have another question about your any%.  You know the central shaft in PYR?  On your return from widebeam, you get up with a series of well timed ice missiles and wall jumps.

However, at the bottom of the shaft, there is a room to the right with a bombable wall, which is long enough for a shine which we can ride all the way up the shaft.

My question:  is this shinespark actually slower than your ascent?  If it's faster, why didn't you do it?
shinespark is slower but easier. i think i actually use the shinespark now.

also, the only time i can think of is around :34 right after the yakuza fight (when i paused during a :51 1% run).
Oh wow, thank you.  That gives me a concrete goal to work towards next time, but also gives me hope that I can salvage this.  :58 or :59 might be possible if I do everything else right.

Especially so since this isn't 1%.
