Looks like it has been made possible to skip the statue on console conditions without Space/Time beam by using a shinespark to get stuck far enough into the wall to climb the statue room. It's interesting that this shinespark technique has been known for a pretty long time (AFAIK) but until now no one had actually thought of using it for the statue skip. Anyway this makes an 8% run (adding varia and speedbooster to the 6% route) theoretically possible but practically next to impossible and 9% (adding ice) has already been completed.

So, the new thing is the new setup for the climb, right? Since Kej found the actual climb seven years ago, but used a setup that required a crystal flash too.

Yeah, Kej's method would require a Crystal Flash and would therefore be at least 10%, and the TAS method for 6% isn't really doable on console conditions. Don't know if any runner actually did do a glitch run before this new skip method was found because as you say it has been known and possible for quite a while.

Very impressed that someone managed to whip up a 8% run already. I didn't know about the 4th metroid room skip, I guess without that no one might have actually had the patience to actually finish such a run. I suspect it won't be a very contested category though :P
