You know that absurd thing in almost all games, when you touch an ennemy, you get hurt?
*Touch*
"Ow!"

Isn't it ridiculus? And flying fingernails from Kraid shouldn't hurt at  all! (thinks back to Maru Mari) Okay, somethings do make sense, like Ridley-he whips and smashes with his tail, blows fire balls, and grabs you. The grabbing part is absurd enough-it causes you damage, when he just pulls you up into the air,and crashes you down.

Now, Fusion. Touching any boss will hurt you. Even the SA-X. Yazuka makes sense(Kudos,Nintendo!). It grabs you and starts to bite you like a normal spider would. Then crashes down, causing you great damage. Most bosses in MP are reasonable, but the Omega Pirate, and Metroid Prime/Prime don't. If you even tap the thing,it damages you. Phazon makes half-sense..but I won't get into that.

Okay. Chill time for me. Say what you think.
Thread title:
I kinda like it... kinda not... I like it because it's so typically video game. Back in the days where enemies didn't actually need an attack animation, and no one complained.

But you're right. It is kinda odd that if you just happen to walk too close, you automatically get damaged...

Then again, what would Metroid be like if Samus was immune to spikes and tentacles? Most enemies would logically not even be able to bruise her. Zoomers and Geemers... What do Rios do? Fly on her? Ow? Viola just crawl around... Skrees I could understand, they actually have some velocity... but not the thing when they explode and the debris causes damage...

...

I can't make up my mind.
Like Rox said, how much fun would a 2d game be where enemies needed to actually attack to damage you? You could run right by most enemies.

It's a game. It doesn't have to always make sense.
Well, heck,it is a game, but what I mean is when you run into things like Pirates and stuff that actully attack you need to make sense.
About zeros and stuff like that in the 2d games,MOST make sense, but tenticles? No way! Flaaghara's spiked tenticles make more sense. Stuff with spikes and stuff make sense ATM,but running into real ennemies and getting hurt doesn't.

Then again,it's just my opinion. :P
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
I think you should probably ask Mario why he dies if he touches the side of a Goomba.

Mushrooms are bad for you. Well, the ones that don't make you "grow" or "invincible"... but those can't be too healthy either...
This is pretty rediculous, but still the OP and MP are Phazonized, so they are radioactive, which makes sense... :?
Of course it doesn't make sense. But neither of those bosses use an attack animation enough to really be dangerous to a canny player. After all, if they didn't hurt, you could just walk right under OP and blast off an armor piece without even worrying about him. So, the unrealism is needed to make the game work.
My one dream has always been to create truly intelligent A.I. and truly responsive controls to create truly intelligent combat.  As in, Flaghra whips a scythe at you, Samus dodges to the side and jumps on and starts running up, midway Flaghra pulls back the scythe, Samus flips off backwards, grabs on a disc, waits for Flaghra's attack, loses her grip, Flaghra takes advantage of the oppurtunity and swings another scythe sideways at Samus.  Samus realizes she's going to get hit, aims up, fires a missle at the disc and uses the explosion to push her down, thus dodging Flaghra in mid-air, and flipping a disc at the same time.  Of course, the problem is, the only program language I know is TI-basic, and you can just imagine how good Metroid Prime would be on that.
I think you'd need a couple more buttons on the GC controller to do something like that. A "free look" move would be nice too...
Perhaps you should ask how the little tiny worms can't die if you shoot a Bazooka bullet directly at them
Little tiny worms?...  Worms armageddon!?!!?  That game was great!  I can't believe others know about that game!!  It is The best!  You must respect that game...  Also it was so realistic...  (-the sheep and skunk throwing... and - the sheeps and skunks being just a tad bigger than the worms.)

*imagines* ...... o_O

Which calculator do you program on. I use TI-89.

Oh, and whats the deal with the Subject in your post?

I made an elaborate dungeon crawler in TI-89 Basic. It took up over 100k.
I made a hilarious game called "Die".  You start out in an airplane that is falling to the ground. You can either jump out, or read the instructions. If you read the instructions, you will die, because the plane crashes while you're reading. If you jump out you have a 50% chance of dying. There are several different scenes, with slimmer odds of survivle and more choices, each with different odds as well.

It seems simple, but I added animations that everyone though were hilarious. Such as moving right, in the woods, and getting eaten by a moose (The evil character in all my games  Twisted Evil ).

Too bad the program got erased during a fatal calculator mistake, in which I have no idea how it happened. Good thing is, I had all the pictures archived.

Err... to stay on topic, the enemies touching/damaging you may be a good thing is some games. Especaily older ones. It saves on programming attacks for the different enemies, and uses the space for more gameplay. Just pretend that the enemy is attacking you telekinetically.

Watch Monty python too much, dawgs?
Nope. I've only seen The Meaning of Life one time.

Actually the moose thing happened a long time ago in 7th grade. I would draw a large background on a piece of paper and have a stick guy fall off a cliff, or get shot out of a cannon, into a boulder and stuff like that. (in sequence on the same sheet. It's hard to explain, but maybe i'll post a picture sometime). One time, he fell off a cliff, got launced to the right somehow (forgot how) and a moose ran from the right and rammed him, while the moose was doing his moose call ("moooooooooooooosssse!!!!!!"). My friends thought it was funny so.... yeah.
Heheh..
Bullets that move at 5mph and hurt you.
A ripper that kills you.
The way the Big N NEVER listens to complaints.

It's all in Metroid: I-IV. I just never seemed how un-realistic some games are(*coughSoniccough*),and how when a bullet traveling at 5mph kills you. Rings that home in on you when they don't have eyes. A brain impervious to damage except for the eye.

Would you rather it travel 300+ mph and  not be able to see it?

I've seen missiles do the same thing. >_>

2 things here. Either the brain is covered by an exoskeloten type thing such as the thing rippers are made of, or it is very soft like a metroid.

:)
Metroid? Realism? Wow, look, a suit that can take 101 tonnes of direct pressure without damaging the wearer. Wow, look, a spaceship that can hover endlessly and travel between solar systems in minutes. Wow, look, a federation consisting of several different life forms from different galaxies all able to flawlessly communicate with each other. Wow, look, IT'S A FREAKIN' SCI-FI GAME!

Did the idea of one woman taking out entire planets alone never seem slightly fictional to you? How about Samus' ability to pick up missiles from thin air, and store hundreds of arm-length projectiles in a suit that shouldn't even have room for one? And why can't you just poke a metroid with a stick? It should go right through and impale its most important organs, right?

Seriously. The day everything we see on TV, read in books and play in games is based on reality, I'll lock myself in a dark room and play Tetris until I starve. So there.
HOW DARE YOU QUESTION THE ABILITY OF NENTENDO!! They make the only games i can actually enjoy! (Besides S-E)
Games would be too easy.  You could run right into them and kill them without them even having a slight chance of hurting you.

As the resident Sonic fan, I must object. Sonic is meant to be unrealistic. If Sonic was realistic, then it wouldn't be a good game. If Metroid was realistic, well, byebye favorite Nintendo series. Most games are based on unrealism.

I like Sonic too. But I like Mario better.  Just don't kill me because I said that.  You're right about if Sonic was realistic, the world would end.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
REALISM =/= QUALITY
