In response to RZP's post:

Well, the D-Pad is mainly for 2D games on the consoles, such as "improved" home versions of arcade games or the latest Tetris spin-off. It's also used to move maps around, like in Starfox Adventures. Both of those are very good uses for it. Although, nowadays, I really would not care if a controller didn't have a D-Pad on it.

Eka and RZP:

And about only having four face buttons, meh, I don't really care. I really liked the N64's seven buttons, but I also like the Dreamcast's four (now that's a controller I liked...but it seems that most people didn't) and the GameCube's five. I actually didn't like the six buttons on the Sega, though.

But I do agree that two shoulder buttons are all that are needed.
Oops... yeah, I meant five face buttons; I forgot about Start.  Embarassed

I don't count Start/Pause/Select, but I guess you could. But I am counting the "Z" button on Nintendo's two latest consoles, even though it's not on the "face" of the controller.
I thought of the N64's Z as a shoulder button (it is not technically on the shoulder of the controller, but you use your index finger for it and stuff) and the GameCube's Z as a mostly useless button.  I hate having to move my index finger off of the R button to reach it, and I hate keeping my index finger on it and using my middle finger for R even more.
But don't you love the PS2 setup of forcing you to use both middle fingers?

Lol.
The "Z" button on the N64's controller was one of the most perfectly designed things ever, IMO. I guess it was the only thing to do when you have three handles, but it still worked extremely well.
So you think two thirds of an N64 controller is ideal?  >_>

Ready and willing.
Well, you were only ever supposed to use two-thirds of it at once.
3 prongs Evil or Very Mad.

Jeez, I just don't get why people don't like the three prongs. Everyone says, "cause I don't have three hands!!" Well, duh, like Yoshi said, you're only ever supposed to use two prongs at once. It's designed so if you want to use the D-Pad, you can do so with extreme comfort and have a shoulder/trigger button to use ("L"). But if you're playing a game that requires the joystick, you can also do THAT with extreme comfort and still have an easy-to-use shoulder/trigger button ("Z"). Basically, it gets rid of the problem that some people have with the Playstation and Dreamcast: some find it uncomfortable to use either the joystick or D-Pad on the Playstation or Dreamcast controllers, depending on their hands. With the N64, you're always comfortable.

Same reason they don't mass market keyboards with keys dedicated to [some symbol]: it's stupid, pointless, and inflates the price. I don't remember ever solely using the D-pad. I'd rather pay $20 for a gamepad with all the uses I need rather than $30 for a gamepad that I just use 2/3 of. If you want more comfort, buy a hori.

I see where you're coming from, but the N64's controller cost the same amount as any other controller, iirc. All the (fairly recent) controllers I've ever bought cost me thirty dollars: N64, PS2, and GameCube.
Maybe without the left prong, they could have made them $30 and able to be touched without breaking.  :P

Ah, but it wasn't a given that the D-Pad was obsolete (when it's put way over there, that is) when the controller was made. Whether that's an excuse or not  is quite a debate...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Yes, but apparently L buttons were obsolete as I have never played an N64 game where the L button mattered or actually did something that the Z button didn't.

The L-button was obsolete because it was stuck with the D-Pad.

That helps drive quite a few complaints, actually... it's kinda wierd having an L and R, but only using one of them.
red chamber dream
But the "L" and the "Z" are supposed to do the same thing! That's the beauty of it...The sole purpose of having three prongs (like I said before) is so you can comfortably reach either the D-Pad OR the joystick. You're not supposed to use them at the same time, or use the "Z" and "L" buttons at the same time.

The thing is, though, people are expecting to use L and R, not only because of prior precedent, but because they're symmetrically named and positioned.

Much better.  >_>

Heh, I love the horrible straight edge that has. Laughing
You know, there's actually some games (first-person shooters only, iirc) that actually use the middle and right prongs only. NOT the left one. That's a little weird, if you ask me, but it's the only way to have dual movement utilities.
"Z" fires and "L" changes weapons, I would assume.
I think you mixed up right and left there Ark.
