A touchscreen will be far cheaper to develop than the circuitry/placement of all the buttons. Not to mention, more versatile. And less responsive. And more resource intensive.

I'd rather have buttons on a controller than a touch screen. But I have faith that Nintendo will come up with an awesome controller, no matter what the style. They always have.

no, it's just a rumor so far.  I would hate a touch screen controller.  Having to look down at the controller to find the right spot to press in the middle of a battle would be a pain.

Err, uh, anyway... is it really necessary to have more than four face buttons and two shoulder buttons on a controller?  I think two shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, and four face buttons is really all you need in a controller.  Maybe.  I do not really dig D-Pads in 3-D games; they do not seem to do anything special...

I personally like the 6 button layout of the Genesis 2/Sidewinder/N64. 4 buttons doesn't really bother me; I just like a bit more. Hate the double shoulders to death though. And I haven't found a reason for dual analog. FPSs suck on consoles and nothing else really uses them properly.
