The annoying thing for me is that I actually play at a similar level to Hotarubi, but I could never achieve the consistency with the tricks that he does - it's freaky!

That's impressive. You should definitely practice your consistency then, if you already have that skill to play on hotarubi's level. What is your current best time for any% or 100% btw?
I haven't done an any%, as it's not to my tastes, but my 100% varies.
My best on console, which I haven't done in years is 0:59, with a 1:02 and a 1:05 in the other slots; my 'console-condition' runs via emu always seem to fall between 0:55 and 1:00, depending on said mistakes and inconsistency with the 'minor' tricks. Bosses always seem to be the other thorn in my side.
I suppose I could always try segmented, but it always feels like it's speed runs, and not a speed run.
0:59 100% SS is great. Which route did you use, though? If it has been years, than you can probably cut down that time significantly with route changes alone.
Most of the time I'd be likely to save would actually be from sparking, since I almost always use the stutter walk now, which means there are loads more possibilities for sparking.
You guys are way beyond my league, I just got SM no Virtual console, and learning my way around the game
You shouldn't feel bad, as we all started there too. Everybody here probably went through the same process:
Complete the game. Complete the game with 100%. Complete the game faster, then faster, then faster, et cetera.
Just keep at it, you'll get there eventually. Also, remember that some of us bought it when it first came out, and have been playing it for well over ten years.
The worst part is that the gameplay is almost unbelievably different from games like MZM and Fusion. The item select thing and dashes are hard to get used to, as you need to use the X key to shoot instead of the B key. And no, I'm a little more intelligent than to compare myself to a TAS run. Getting a time like that manually is pretty freaking hard
Yeah, but I haven't found a more comfortable control scheme than the original, though I do always switch the item select and item cancel buttons. The best controller to play Super Metroid with is the Gamecube Controller, because you can bind the Z button to be dash, but you can't do that on the classic controller, which I have, and that really sucks.
I usually map the L shoulder button to dash. Aside from losing one of the angle buttons I wouldn't think it's much different from mapping Z to dash on the GC controller...?
