lol. nate has said that to see a user's post count, you can just view their profile. For example, yours is 844, DeathNoble. So he obviously does not want us not to know other users' post counts. It's more to take the focus off the post counts on the forum pages, so conversation is not about "zomg wut rnak am ay?".

Your second paragraph is far-fetched imo.
Lol whats with the gianormis profile cards?

Hate to say it, but what you want doesn't matter. It's whatever nate decides to do.

Alright, since he has a yellow name. I guess I better get use to this.

Everytime I view a thread, all the content of the thread comes up, then the page refreshes itself, like if I had hit F5 on my computer.  It's not a hinderance or anything, as it happens before I can even drag my mouse over to the scrollbar, but it is somewhat annoying to see happen over and over again.

that's the horizontal scrollbar prevention mod in action. iirc there was a way to not show the page until it's finished loading ... i'll look into that after i finish fixing the old post warning mod.
Uh, anyone else seeing "Spoiler:" pop up in the middle of the message space instead of on the left side?  Looks kind of weird.

Well, not really. It's because he's the owner and operator of this site and forum. The rest of the yellow- and green-namers just help him out a bit.

I thought all yellow names (not green names) were the owners of this forum.
Until Yoshi348 turned from green to yellow.
I suppose this is a 'me too' post, but I'd be happy with ranks without postcount.  (Or postcount without ranks.  Or having both.)  It seems that in the time I've been here, which I guess is about a year and a half, there's been very little fuss about titles; I remember a bit of it shortly after I joined but that was also about when the number of mods was shrunk down.  Maybe I've just missed the posts about it in other threads, but I really only recall this being recent, and just one or two users who haven't exactly shown themselves to be...really in touch with things.  Why alter the entire board because of a localized bit of cluelessness?  If nothing else, use the post count/rank thing as a litmus test for whether or not they read the rules (provided that these are addressed in the rules, of course) and act accordingly.

I also don't really like having the distinction between the privileged and the not widened further.  Mods and admins already have custom ranks and colorful names, is it necessary to make the point further by leaving a blank space for everyone else?  It's kind of reminding me of the continuing conversation in locked topics thing I complained about before.  I don't favor custom titles for all, as that gets too silly, but having fun titles for some and no titles for everyone else seems a little too cliqueish, maybe just because it's more visible.

Don't worry about me tooing when you're making a post that has more than 1 or 2 sentences. There's no way you're not going to add something unique to the conversation then.
Hey, if you really want to, you could add it to your avatar. Of course there's the trouble with multiple forum styles..

I think Chan makes a good point.  I think the presence of custom ranks on us is division enough.  For us to have them and everyone else not too is a bit off imo.

Yellow means administrator (only nate is the owner of this forum). Green means moderator. See above for more on what each can do.

I agree with Chanoire and Saber. There has never been a problem with user ranks before, and I see no reason for removing them.

I knew that. I thought all admins were the owners of this forum. Embarassed

Lol what would the tesxt and size be? and plus you can always make it transparent but there would be that stupid gap anyway.

If you look at the CSS file, it's Verdana, size 10, #000000 for SubSilver and for SmartDark it's Courier New, size 10 and #CCCCCC.

I didn't want to say that out loud, but I was thinking it.  Especially when I mentioned I wanted to get rid of that space where our user ranks used to be, but after I said that, I realized in order to get rid of that space, mods/admins would probably have to lose the custom ranks.

Hmmm...  Perhaps if we switched up the information on the left of the post?  For example, it displays the username, followed by location, age, gender, favorite game, etc, then avatar then under the avatar, the mods/admins could have their custom ranks.  That way, the blank space where our regular user ranks would still be there, but we wouldn't know it from looking and the mods/admins get to keep their ranks.
red chamber dream
Don't think you can do that with php.
rotfl. i can most certainly do that, but there's no point: i could get rid of the blank space just as easily.
red chamber dream
Ah, so php can actually do something!
Whoohoo!

Just as long as mods/admins don't lose their custom ranks.  I don't want to be the source of an angry mod mob after me for being the voice of the revolution that caused them to lose something special to them.

php != phpbb

PHP is a programming language for server-side applications (read - web input and output). PHPbb is a bulletin board system written in PHP (although probably everyone else is too, except maybe if Microsoft has some tools... PHP is THE language for this stuff) that's open source. However, from what I've heard, when it comes to bulletin board software, you actually get what you pay for. A software market obeying basic laws of pricing economics? WTF?
i've corrected all problems with the replying to old topics warning mod by rewriting practically the entire mod myself. needless to say, my mind is full of wonder and amazement atm. i'm not a coder ... i'm not a coder ...

I was gonna say that too…

The big thing I don't see here is the reason Nate decided to do this.  We have only one person who has openly tried to increase his rank, and the solution to this problem should be disciplinary action against him and all others who have that motive, not everyone.  It's like…well DRM.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) software is used to prevent people from stealing intellectual property, such as music or computer software.  In order to do this, companies must impose restrictions that hurt the legal buyers as well, and in some cases (such as SonyBMG), do more harm to the legal users than the pirates.  Plus, pirates are not thwarted by DRM in most cases anyway, it just cuts down numbers until someone eventually finds a way around it, yet it's still hurting the users that paid for it.

Yah, it's a little harsh, but so was removing ranks and post count.
