A British TV celebrity hints at the possibility.

A Twitter conversation between British television celebrity Jonathan Ross and a follower may have inadvertantly leaked the announcement of a new Metroid game for the Nintendo 3DS, to be revealed during Wednesday's press event for the system.

Ross announced that he would be part of the European press event this coming week, and briefly discussed how much he liked the 3D effects of the handheld.  Followers then began asking him about the event and what might be unveiled, with one mentioning that he was going to "keep his fingers crossed for Metroid".  To this Ross responded: "I think you're going to be pleased then...", without offering any further details.

Does this mean a 3DS Metroid game will be announced?  Nobody knows, but it's safe to assume that, as a celebrity involved with the planning of the event, Ross is at least partially aware of what's going to be shown to the European press.

The European 3DS press reveal is scheduled for Wednesday, January 19, with a 3DS preview event being held in New York City on the same day.

UPDATE: In a follow-up posting Ross stated "A few other faves coming as well - plus a few unexpected revivals!! Can say no more, sorry."

Good ol Wossy. This sounds very exiting. If it's true
Wow. I expected some obviously out-of-thin-air rumour but for Wossy to say that, seems pretty clear what he's implying.
Come on F-ZERO!!

Would certainly be nice of them to bring back some good old 2D Metroid along with some other classic franchises. This would be the perfect time to do it to help hype up the 3DS even more than it has been.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
As much as I'd love the 2D Metroid remake of my dreams, I get the impression that with the whole 3D thing, we're gonna see a Hunters / Prime attempt.  Fingers crossed that we don't.

I agree more than sex! I miss 2D metroid game so much!
It might just be a port of an existing game, such as what they are going to do with OoT.
I like turtles.
I'd be fine with an updated remake of Super.

I'd rather they did this than Other M 2: Adam's Revenge which is obviously what's coming next in the series.

Yeah, that's true, and after how well Other M did who knows what Nintendo's thinking about the older games right now. The Prime trilogy outsold it by a longshot, so you're probably right. I'm just hoping that given the recent return to 2D that they've done with Mario, DK, and Kirby, that they would consider doing a new 2D Metroid.

Still, I'm holding out for either an ROS update like ZM or else a new one set after Fusion. There's only so many places the storyline can go at this point without moving forward.
Hmm... a new handheld Metroid title? The possibilities are dreadful.

What you guys think?

Joystiq: Speaking of the core Metroid development team that last worked on the GBA, there have been rumors of a game known as 'Metroid Dread' - purportedly a 2D Metroid game for DS. First question: Was 'Dread' a real project? Second question: If not, where is a 2D Metroid on DS?

Yoshio Sakamoto: It seems we get a lot of questions about Metroid Dread, especially at interviews following E3 for example. But nothing's ever been announced about this game; it's all just been rumors so far. So we never know exactly how to respond to questions like this.

While there actually was a point where some teams were meeting to discuss if it was possible to create a 2D Metroid for DS using a relatively small team size, it's not something that we ever really announced or thought of as "Metroid Dread." But whenever people bring out that idea, we recognize that the basic concept is something that we can't say never existed. But at the same time, we can't of course, make any official comment about a Metroid Dread-like project coming out.

Our main goal [with Metroid: Other M] is to, as I said earlier, first raise knowledge about the Metroid universe and the Samus character before we start to introduce different elements like online or even going back to another handheld game for the next in the series. So there's nothing coming immediately, we want to think about these new challenges first.

But, of course, we never say never.

He wants revenge for being a wank character.

I think a game that controls in 2D would translate best to 3D. Imagine a sidescroller where all the layers of backgrounds had perceivable depth to them? and it didn't detract from or impede on the gaming experience?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
That's what I'd be hoping for.  I always think of Smash Bros. backgrounds, or the sections in Prime where you are in morph tunnels.
I always think of New super Mario bros or something but that's probably pretty dated now and they could do something even better now.
Anywhere, everywhere
DKCR is an excellent recent example.

I actually wouldn't mind this, but I doubt they'd be able to pull this off without a complete overhaul of the game's level design and soundtrack.

It basically would be.
They'd have to pull a ZM in terms of pointing you where to go... and they'd definitely increase the items available.
They'd very likely drastically up the difficulty level of all the metroid phases.

But hey, if they can make it so that I can actually get through the game, I'm all for it.
