I'm not quite sure how to avoid his tail completely.  It pretty much hits everywhere :(

Once I avoided a few of his swings by using bombs to propel Samus up into the air.  It seems that Ridley doesn't follow Samus into the air.  But I hit the ceiling eventually and had to come back down and then I got hit.  If only Samus had an ability to let her stay in the air indefinitely...

I didn't really avoid Super Missiles on purpose.  Once I got into Ridley I can't get out, and I pretty much just bombed and shot at everything until I found a way further into Ridley.  It took me forever to figure out there are some missile blocks in the ceiling.  It was also there that I really got practice on using bombs to propel Samus upwards.

In Ridley I didn't really find any Super Missiles on my way to the boss.

In the beginning, after I shoot a few missiles into Ridley, his fireballs start getting in the way and I just waste missiles.

Oh yeah thanks for all the help so far guys.  Does anyone know exactly how many missiles I need to put down this Pteradactyl on crack?
soaking through
Lots.  And there is a way to avoid his tail/stay up indefinitely: very clever walljumping.  But you need to be stupidly good at the game in order to do so.  My advice is to start over and try to get lots of items this time.  You don't wanna go for low% first time; ZM isn't a particularly long game, and it's easy to run through multiple times.  I've run it at least 5 times, and I don't partiularly like the game.

okay, do this:

1) go to the quicktime download site (click on that link there, the one just to the left of this text).
2) decheck the "QuickTime News", "New Music Tuesdays" and "I would like to receive Apple news, software updates, special offers, and information about related products and services from other companies." checkboxes. this will keep you from having to enter personal information into the boxes.
3) hit the "Download Quicktime" button. try to save it to your desktop if possible.
4) once the .exe is downloaded, double-click it to start it (if you didn't pick to start it when you downloaded it). proceed through the installation, not changing anything.
5) reboot if prompted. at least restart internet explorer/firefox.
6) go to the example ridley fight again and watch it, then look at the cheesing strategy, which is how you should probably beat him.

good luck.

I didn't really want to fight this boss at this time, but like I said I got stuck in the area.  I think I'm supposed to fight some other boss first.

Oh, walljumping is Samus propelling herself off walls I assume?  No way to use bombs to stay in the air forever?

I think I'm going to go download quicktime again and hope I can watch the vids.  *follows Nate's intructions*
lol no way
Actually, you CAN use bombs to "hover" in mid-air, although it's not even close to something you'd use in this battle, as it takes about 5 seconds to get up there, and is hardly reliable when compared to repeatedly walljumping. You can do it by doing a single bomb jump, then rather than laying the next bombs above it, lay them a bit later, even below it; it's possible to lay the bombs so late that your height very, very gradually decreases, so if you lay them at intervals of higher and lower, it's possible to more or less stay where you are. Although I'm not saying this is easy, by any means. It's difficulty level would be up there with the Kraid horizontal bombjump, that allows you to skip the Acid Worm.
Oh, and since for some reason I can't help but think you don't know what walljumping is/how to do it, simply jump against the wall, press the opposite direction, and press the jump button again, and Samus will jump off the wall and keep going upward. You can scale a single wall by pressing back against the wall after the walljump, and then repeating. Sorry if you already knew that, it's just when you asked for confirmation on what it was, I felt I'd make it... more clear. :p
Well, I think I've done it by accident before, right before I fell down that long shaft in Norfair, but thanks for clarifying! :D  It'll help me to avoid Ridley's tail.

Quicktime's about done downloading.  Your video is the one everyone says is the definition of awesomeness right?  I'll go watch that soon.
I have quicktime, and I have seen the LIGHT!  Your vid kicks so much butt it's not even possible to describe with words!  I need to emuate your Ridley fighting style.
lol no way
Hahaha, I love it when people say that, it's my lasting legacy. I'd only do it though if you're going for style points and want to impress your buddies. Another hardcore thing to do is roll just between his tail stabs; actually a lot easier once you get the timing down. Thanks though. :p
Yay!  I managed to find super missiles in Ridley without killing the stupid bee!  I also found more missiles and e-tanks.  Now ridley will surely die!
