it's spring break and i have a ridiculous amount of time to myself! i hope to make a lot of progress on my run this week.

to bring those who haven't heard of my run up to speed on how i'm using the word "nominal," basically i wanted to demonstrate how fast it would be possible to beat the game using known strategies. certainly (after today, anyway), my run is no longer representative of the fastest it is theoretically possible to beat the game, but i still hope that i will come close to the above explained ideal, "nominal."

i started to use that word when i was trying to figure out how many missile tanks i should collect to repeat my any percent run from last summer (1:03), this time without choking at nettori (i quickly ran out of ammo in the previous run). when i was figuring this out last august, i felt that my nettori fight had been the worst part of my run, and that my time had been limited most by my inability to kill him quickly. as my colleague sesshoumaru has demonstrated time and time again, i couldn't have been more wrong about nettori. it now seems that i will gain tenfold more time using sess's ingenious tricks than by slaughtering nettori.

oh well -- all the better. my new run will simply stand as a testament to the ability of sesshoumaru's tricks to be translated to the actual cartridge. i've had about a 90% implementation rate with said tricks so far -- dealing with a 2d game means it's entirely my fault if i fail to mimic him. no random, crossway-like crap here ... just raw skill.

so far in the run, i've saved after a pixel-perfect sesshoumaru first shaft, after a no-roll arachnus, after the entirety of srx, after three two-missile larvae, after a four jump giant plant, after a two-hit serris, and after a pyr in which i was able to duplicate every one of sess's tricks, with the exception of his box fight (mine is a second or two slower).

unfortunately, i was not able to insert corollax's speed trick into my run, as it appears to require not only accuracy down to one frame (1/60th of a second), but an extremely difficult roll from right to down in that frame, as well. i have duplicated it on the cartridge before, but my accuracy was less than one in one hundred tries. i made a decision that the rest of the segment (saving before box would easily waste the time i had gained executing corollax's trick) was too difficult to force the trick, so i aborted it. time will tell if i will regret this decision.

at any rate, the entrance to noc is next. i saved before the dual computer briefings, since an important speed trick occurs at the start of noc and depends on a speed boost which needs more starting room than the one at the start of pyr. i plan to save before the mega-x (or "varfia"), since sess's methodology here is clearly fast enough to warrant sacrificing about ten seconds to save. i don't know about you, but i'd prefer to not sit through two computer briefings every time i screw up varfia.
Thread title:
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.
Any reason why you couldn't put up some completed segments right now? It'd ease the eventual hit to your bandwith...
that's true, yoshi, but i'd like to look toward the ideal with this run, and ideally speaking, the bandwidth will take a massive hit whether i release it as i go or not (due to a lot of interest in the run). for that reason, the run will premiere at sda first, then will be available at m2k2 as soon as demand dies down for it.

and i just took the next segment! everything went great except for the final mid-air unmorph over random, pointless pit, which i've gotten before, but didn't happen this time. ah well, probably less than a second lost there.

i went ahead and picked up the energy tank, since i lose less than a second to it if i lay the bomb before i pick it up (the bomb goes off during the "tank acquired" message and opens the passage i need to fall down). this changes my run from a 9%-nominal run back to a 10%-nominal run, currently at 8%.

on to varfia, then, and we'll see how sharp my timing is.
just took segment nine!

with some help from sess, figured out that i had the potential to get a four hit varfia. so i did. random elements chewed on me a bit afterward, culminating in the single worst mistake of the run yet, but hey, i gotta show them i'm human somehow, right?

on to arc.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Why'd you hit kip 4 times?  :(

And what's with n...... as sig?

"you got beat by the fusion suit!"

it's from hentai. :)
well, i went through the rest of the game to make sure i'm on the right track as far as 10% goes, etc, and i saved at every freaking save point in there after heading back to the ship for yakuza, since samus has a nasty habit of dying i had forgotten about. nightmare was horrible, my escape/o.metroid was even worse (sess needs to get on that guy, because i just now realized that uncharged shots hurt him...), and i still finished with 1:04:

about one minute slower than my previous time. :) but where did the extra items come from? i was bored. :P

i think this is good news, anyway.

see you tomorrow!
It would have been so cool if you would have done another 1:03
That's my exact time on a 1% run. But, one difference is that I'm at that Yakusa boss and I died about 50 times now. I can manage to get him Red when he flips around. Yes, I have read those videos, If I hadn't I wouldn't even do a 1% run. :)
cool. my 1% time was drastically more than that, something like 1:3X or 1:4X. not sure what i was doing all that time, either, except maybe i forgot to pause it while i was talking to my parents or something. (it was in the car on the way to college last year.)

Oh..I'm used to just 'aaaaaaa'
Yes! Omg! I actually did it! I beat him on 1%! Whooohooo!! :D. My time is now 1:13  :P.
:P

just took an arc segment. there's one of those horribly embarrassing first-time incidents in there that only show up in segments you keep, but hey, it didn't cost much time, so it's in.

now for the interesting one..."meltdown." i hope to force a lot of sess's tricks in this one since i saved before it. actually, not saving before it wasn't an option, due to the boss door therein. two shots from that thing and the cost of the save is gone, and i doubt i would have gotten a good enough arc/pyr for some time to warrant skipping it.

hopefully it'll take me significantly less than three months to manage this segment. :P

also: mcdonald's, the virginia opossum, and eldrick.
I didn't find the Meltdown part very hard, but if fell in the Lava, consider yourself fried. Which sucks even more when you get your Wide Beam and Fall on the way back... Not pretty.
people will probably wonder, "why did he take the segment if the boss door fired once??"

because it's meltdown, that's why, and this is about as good as it's going to get without crying over a matter of two seconds.

now i need to figure out how long the next segment is going to be. afaik there's nothing that hard in arc ii so i should probably stick that onto the end of the ete/dach rescue mission. however, not sure about the trip back to the ship ... guess i'll start trying it and see how lucky i am.
wow, that was a cliffhanger. heart is still pounding. that game likes to scare the shit out of me, and it just did, right before the end of that nearly flawless segment. ah well, that's a keeper.

inserted a spectacular trick that originally came from corollax about halfway through the segment. that's not exactly where in the game it was meant to be applied, but he had the right idea doing it in this same place later on. i just exploited another bug at the end of it to make it doubly useful here. this was actually my test run to see if i could handle doing the trick in the middle of a segment or not, and apparently i can. :) poor sess missed this one, and it's a really cool looking thing, but he couldn't have done it saving where he did, anyway, so maybe it's not so bad.

now ready to head back to the ship. i totally suck at this section, more so than any other specific part of the game, so i'll have to carefully study sess's segment and mimic what he does exactly in order to get through without losing hella time. actually, i'm not even sure the random factor will allow me to do that, so i guess i just need to be hopeful.
well, i forgot that same damn shortcut in arc ii, the power bomb tunnel in the first large room, so i'll be redoing that segment. good thing i keep a backup of the previous save for cases like this.

going to pull a kip here and actually view it as good news, since it means i can shave hella time off of my save before heading back to the ship.
just took the segment!! the worst part was my sa-x screwup: i 1) missed the mid-air morph into the passage, 2) attempted to grab on and pull myself in and failed (because the power bomb was still going off) and then the resulting 3) getting hit by the ice beam.

so i guess it's time to head back to the ship for real.
spent a little extra time on this segment to try to squeeze out every last second. had a minor screwup on the way down the first shaft, but i checked frame by frame and i actually lay the power bomb before the holdup occurs, so it was actually zero time lost. it's a keeper.

now for your friend and mine, yakuza. guess it'll just be restarting until the bastard opens his mouth on the first try/gives me a good space jump form.
just took a yakuza segment, and i'm proud to say it's excellent, easily the best in the world ever recorded (though we shall see what daveb can pull in his 100%). gained five or six seconds on sess in the fight itself, and who knows how much tacking the entrance to tro onto the end of the segment.

now for the dreaded nettori, the heart and soul of nominal any percent and quite a challenge with the discovery of the secret spot. i can't see myself tacking the entrance to arc onto him unless my skill at landing in the spot increases (i have yet to do it on the first try). ah well, this is segment fifteen already, might as well make six or seven more. :P

Good luck on Nettori! Alot of my time got knocked out on him due to I ran out of missiles... Nuts.

precisely what i hoped to avoid when i finished my plan for a "nominal" run. it appears as though i will have about six or seven remaining missiles when nettori dies - perfect for the core x.
just took a nettori segment. it's mediocre, and i'm at least 120 seconds behind sess now, but hey, i can only do so much with what i'm given...
Sooo 1:03 is still the record around here right? I'm only 7 minutes behind that ;)
and the hilarious part is, you will still be number three even after i post my new time, since i was number two before (after gamecube04).
