Hi, I thought some of you might be interested in my Metroid speed run video. It finishes in about 32:20 by the rules here as I understand them. Here is the link:

http://www.vortiginous.com/vids/sdkess-metroid-3227.zip

It was played on a real NES with no cheats. There were a couple of big screw ups, but overall this was a pretty good run. I've actually sent the tape to Twin Galaxies along with another speed run I did in which I skipped Ridley. That run is very sloppy so I'm not going to make a video until I get a cleaner run.

I think sub-30 might be barely possible (without miniboss skips) with less mistakes and a few modifications. It won't be easy though...

EDIT: When Samus gets hit or when she's on an elevator she sometimes goes invisible. This looks strange, but it's due to my POS capture card not picking up every frame when Samus "flashes".
Thread title:
Hey sdkess!
I downloaded your run and will check it out and probably have it on SDA tomorrow.  Now I just need that SMB vid Wink
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Nice, I'll watch it tomorrow.

nah, you'd be hard pressed to find a capture device that would simulate a (~)60hfps interlaced environment for you. and if you did, it would look like crap on the computer, unless someone came up with a new way of simulating what it looks like on the tv (i.e. go ahead and capture at 60 fps and at double the native res of the device whose analog signal you're capturing, and then alternate fields every frame, correcting for position).

damn, i should head to the patent office ...

btw, welcome to m2k2. i'll be watching your run shortly.
Ah, I guess the invisible sprite problem affects everyone then. Thanks for the info. I can stop looking for a new capture card now!

Ohhh you made that Ninja Gaiden 1 video I got a couple days ago...alas you cut off the ending so I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END.  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad

bah  Crying or Very sad
So you've seen the NG video? Cool. I'm sorry about cutting the ending off... I'm hoping to do some more capturing this weekend so I'll be sure to get the NG ending if I haven't taped over it. My aim in that run was to take no damage, but I gave up because I could not kill the final boss without getting hit by its rolling head. The head can be killed before it touches you, but it's nearly impossible with only a sword.

It would probably be a cool idea to make a video of just the cut scenes edited together, but I don't think I can do that with my video software.
i can.

would you like to have some comments on your run's page, like the others that are already there?

also need the date on which you completed that run.

All you'd need is VirtualDub.

Ok, thanks. I do have VirtualDub already so I should be set.

This Metroid run was done on April 6th. I'll get some comments together later tonight.

Hmm, I don't mean to be a butthole, but I just taped a 29:xx both boss run today.. >.>

I go a different route, and it's very tough (that or I just really really kept sucking over and over and over), and I could've gotten :28, maybe :27 with no messups, but oh well, it's under :30.

I have no desire for TG stuff though.
You know, you guys really scare me...if I were able to get out of Brinstar without cheating, I would be grateful to finish in under 5 hours! You also all scare me in Zero Mission. The other ones I can get but...30 min.?! The best time I've ever gotten in a Metroid game is 1:51 (Fusion). Well, I hope to see your run Red Scarlet. Maybe it'll help me beat the game finally!

Well, just play the game a few times to get to know what to expect, then hope for the best.

I did learn a couple of things off sdkess' vid though, so that's cool.
But I did do some new stuff that I didn't even do in my not-yet-posted :56 100% either.

Seeing where you messed up a couple times allowed me to think of an alternate method at some parts, so I did those, and likely if my video gets posted I'm sure sdkess can see where I mess up and improve on that and easily get a :28 or maybe a :27.
Very nice time RS! I figured that under 30 minutes was possible without skipping minibosses, but I had no idea that someone would break that mark so soon!

I have some ideas for speeding up my run, but I've been mostly focusing on the skip Ridley path since TG is allowing it.

EDIT: I just figured out something pretty cool that I've never seen anyone else do. It saves quite a few seconds.

Oh, cool cool.  I tried that on my GBA SP and got about :25 cause I really sucked at getting into Tourian. :/

I tried for :28 again earlier but got frustrated..I'll wait till summer.
Getting missile pickups when I need them is my biggest frustration. Sometimes you just can't get what you want. I've made it to Tourian pretty fast several times, but I couldn't get missile pickups in the last Metroid room...
Actually, I probably have the skill to beat Metroid in under 3 hours, along with stuff in other games such as under 2 hours in ZM, 23% in Prime (actually, maybe not that), and others. Just that I have no patience...and I have skill, just not much. Oh well, at least I can take comfort that I'm good at math...

Ya, that killed about 8 of my runs..running out of missiles.  And then my coolest finish I could've gotten (1 energy and 2 missiles left and MB needing 1 more shot to kill then I die) was destroyed.
I went ahead and posted the run at SDA even though you haven't given us comments yet.  Rolling Eyes

What's with you and Nate's love affair with comments anyway? They're like more important than the video to yall!  :P

Well SDA has over 7000 quake demos now ... and i always made sure that there was a txt file with them. Just because it's good to see at a glance what the demo is, and some brief comments from who made it.  The same is true for the generalized speed run.  I'm not expecting a novel, if all you want to say is "I spent 2 hours on this and it could be a lot better" then that's fine with me.
Sorry about the delay on the comments. I just e-mailed them to you Radix.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Oh, so I guess that's why my :58 comments were ok.  I just go dl the file though. >.>

Ready and willing.

That's okay, you saved me about an hour downloading his thing. ^_^ Got to pick an choose my downloads...

No, you should still watch it, as he put a lot of effort in that.  *thinks of Super Metroid with Yoshi's comment and  :( 's*
