First of all ...

Hey, everyone! I miss you. :) :/

That said, I was able to pick up a very nice PAL PCI capture card in Dessau (it was 50€ and is from Pinnacle, so you can try to figure out what it is exactly if you want; all I know is that it captures PAL at D1 or whatever they call it, full resolution or 720 x 576 I believe). This should complement my new NTSC All in Wonder (with the brightness and contrast directly controllable on the card via VDub) nicely. Really looking forward to capturing in bad ass quality when I get back (maybe even recapturing some important historical runs without the VHS Defects problem that plagued me with the crappy old DV Bridge, and if it's an NTSC run, without the damned Brightness Problem as well!!).

I also obtained the European version of Metroid Zero Mission and the (apparently) Germany-specific Player's Choice version of Metroid Prime. There is nothing other than German language material on the box, so if this is identical to the PAL version I already have, I'll be very surprised. Will do a complete sweep of both games for differences when I get back.

Now that I'm here in Wust for the actual classroom part of the trip, there probably won't be much more to report until I get back. Try to hang on for a few more weeks without me. I know it's hard, but you can do it if you really try. :P

Incidentally, I should be able to check this thread almost daily if you'd like to talk to me about anything. Please do me a favor and make sure all the staff people see this, as well.

Nice to hear from you nate! I guess you're able to get online and you can see all the runs I've been capturing in shît quality Wink

I've got a healthy collection of 9 tapes that have been mailed to me now... I have no idea what i'll do with them all when I have 10x that amount.

Well, we could make a decision as to which ones are 'high priority for quality' or whatever and you can just mail those to me. I can go ahead and capture things even if they aren't Metroid to help lighten the load a bit. If you want to go ahead and mail things in about a week so that they'll already be there when I get back, the address is:

Probably would be better to hold off on mailing things to me after I get back, though, as I'll be moving into my new apartment in Lubbock (with Rachel!!!) at the end of July. However, if something comes to Kansas too late, it's not the end of the world, as my parents can just forward it to me, and I won't have to deal with the shit mail service at the university anymore, either.

Incidentally, I added Rachel to the mods so she could see this.

Did you see the story I posted about Dragondarch's 100%? Here is the post. I think it ended up quite good though, not sure what you could do to make it better, but you'll have to be the judge when you watch it in 3+ weeks.

Sweet. It's good to see we're still getting new people (fresh blood? :P) I'm also really looking forward to seeing what kip's final time will be, mainly so I can start on this project I've had in mind since April. :)

And what project would that be? kip is currently working on the phazon elite segment... he's delaying himself a bit in his room to destroy all 4 turrets since he has no e-tanks. He made it to CD once but wasn't satisfied. After he gets this seg, there's one more hard one, and then he'll be home free. I still predict 1:09 final time.

No need to do anything for me Nate, if that's what you mean. This run has already overshadowed all the other ones in progress as it is... obviously wasn't my intention, but it happened. I think when I'm done it'll have less time in the sun though, since I've been uploading as I go. Most people who would have wanted to see it will have already done so before it ever shows up here or at SDA. That should even it out.

Yeah, finally started working on part9 yesterday after putting it off for a week or longer. It's not as hard as I thought; 30 minutes yesterday and I got something I wasn't happy with but might take, around 20 minutes so far today and I got something a mere 2 seconds better. So I would be 40:43 if I took this latest one... not sure what to do but I guess I'll spend around a week here and just take the best I have at the end.

Yeah, thought about that deal with people having already seen the segments as well. It's a shame, because we don't pay for bandwidth anymore (either with real money or with ads). So I'm going to try my damndest to make sure everyone is excited about your final segment and about the official posting of the run. What would be really cool is if you could tell me a target time you think you're going to get, and then when you get it, give me about two days to release my project before we release your last segment (and your entire run) on the two sites. That way I think it may get more attention. Totally up to you, though.

Also there's the thing about me having supposedly solved the brightness problem. IIRC one of your segments got taped over so I can't do the entire run, but at your option I could go ahead and do the remaining eleven or twelve or whatever in the high quality and then just stick with the low for the one and explain that the master was deleted before the new technology was available. That would obviously be after we release your existing captures, unless you feel like making people wait for me to get the tapes in the mail.

You're thinking of trebor... kip captures while he plays and doesn't record to VHS I think.

Nate, once part3 was recorded over, I stopped trying to save the segments on tape. I figured it was pointless if I couldn't have them all. I thought I mentioned this as soon as it happened, in Febuary or March.

I still have the originals, so I could always make "better" versions, but I guess it wouldn't have compared to what you can do. I don't even see much of a difference at higher bitrates (the originals look nice enough though). The fact that they came from a VCR almost defeats the point of better versions outright.

No need to make a big deal about finishing the run. ;-) It's fine. Appreciate it though.

Ohhh, okay, right, I remember that now. Sorry for the confusion. I guess we'll just have to deal with post-capture adjustment on your run. It should be fine, I mean, your segments are clear enough.

Being away this long really makes me want to do a new Prime run, too, especially with the new capture ability. Maybe a speed 23%, try to beat s.jack or something. But I also have Super and Fusion to worry about.

So much fun, so little time ... ;P

I guess you don't know how to make that plasma trooper before Elite Quarters not show up? If it doesn't cost time it would be useful. There was a thread about it a while ago... didn't even know that was possible at the time.

No, unfortunately I don't. I wonder how exactly Rachel remembers what she did there. Have you tried some or are you still trying to see if someone knows before you start trying? IIRC it had something to do with dying at OP and then coming back.

lol ok. eigentlich bin ich in wust, gerade gegenüber die elbe von tangermünde (in sachsen-anhalt). ich bin ja auf eine wunderschöne führung von sachsen-anhalt in diesen letzten wochen gefahren. wir amerikaner haben nichts wie ihr deutschen, d.h. mir war alles sehr eindrucksvoll. und gut für die seite auch - wie gesagt, ich habe die pal capture card jetzt und kann pal ohne vhs-defekte (hoffentlich) capturen (sehr gut seit gestern, wenn ich von einem neuen pal-run erzählt wurde), und je gut mein deutsch wird, desto mehr seiten kann ich ins deutsche übersetzen.

sofort wenn ich zu hause angekommen bin werde ich meine bilder, videos usw zu wust2004.com hochladen, so dass ihr (meine freunde) ein bißchen von meiner reise erleben könnt.
