I'm planning on doing a 100% Hard Single-Segment(not :P ) No-Damage run in the near future, so I'm starting a topic about it. This is going to be an attempt at a ZM equivilant of sess' fusion run, and more than likely it won't be nearly as good, but I still intend for it to be awesome.  I'm doing this on a GBP, no rom. I've done one such run before, but I forgot what the time was (It's probably somewhere in the time, %, difficulty topic) .

I'm going to try to break AJ's 100% hard record with this run. I'm not sure about what my route will be, or how many times and where I will save. I need some advice on the two points stated above. By no damage I mean the energy bar never changes from 99, in the course of the entire game. I'm going to record this, but even though this game doesn't have stupid idiot random factors like fusion, this is gonna take awhile to pull off. With christmas coming around, and me getting new games, I may not start this until next spring/summer, but I want to go ahead and decide my route and crap. If someone could like, list all the routes for 100%, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

After I start my run, I'll post updates on it inside this topic, and not the time, %, difficulty topic, so you'll have to check here to see where I'm at, and what room I'm struggling with at the moment (and hopefully help with it).

lol no way
I'm pretty sure it won't be possible with my route, or at least not possible to beat my time. Sometimes it's necessary to take damage in order to get through a room faster. But anyway, best of luck to you.
Here is the topic where I talked about my previouse no-damage run:

I went to kraid after getting varia, so I didn't have the ice beam. I'm thinking about getting the ice beam before I go to kraid this time, so I'll have the fine luxury of freezing enimies.
Wow. My entire 10% Hard Mother Brain battle was based on deliberately taking damage.
thats interesting, when i fought mother brain i was trying NOT to get hurt. hah, i dont know how you could last because on 10% hard 1 or 2 hits and ur dead

Well, i had 99 energy, and her evil eye ray did 80 damage. For some reason, I found it easier to take the hit and recharge than to upset the delicate balance I had created by trying to dodge the shot.

I think I eventually worked dodging into my pattern, but that was later.
I guess you won't be getting some items earlier (one that require Varia) then, since your energy bar would drop?

And for this route, I think you'll have to design a totally new route(with some parts for other runs) just because of the fact you don't want your bar to drop.
Na, I can get varia early, just not that E-tank in the room before the suit. I can get the E-tank after I get the suit, just not before. I think the route in my last run was : Start, Varia, Kraid, Norfair, Crateria, Norfair, Ridley, Taurian, Chozodia, Cleanup, and then lastly chozodia. I'm not sure if that's right, because I might have gotten Power Grip before Kraid, but I don't remember. I'm not sure about any of it actually, because I haven't played ZM in so long I don't even remember the routes. I do remember that I didn't have to make a new route to get no damage though.
I've been thinking about my run, and I'm leaning towards just making a regular hard 100% run, instead of no damage. I'm sure that I can't get a new record if I do no damage, because I would have to do alot of things slower, and go around certain shortcuts, and all together they would cost me about 2 minutes, even if I did them as fast as possible. If I did just a regular hard 100% run, I'm pretty confident that I could brake AJ's record. So I'm left with this chioce; I can continue to do my no-damage run, and get a significantly lower time, or I can Just do a regular run, and probably brake the record. I don't know what to do, and some input would help.

By the way, some of the things that I'm talking about that would force me to go slower are: Not being able to skip varia, a very slow ridley fight, having to go slower in many parts of the game, adding up to alot of time lost, not being able to take the shortcut to norfair after kraid( through the room with two rippers and a missile tank ), and some other slower boss fights.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Good luck on the sub hour 100% hard.

Maybe this'll kick AJ in the pants to go for it too..

*stays with 1:04:44 from March*
i think i speak for most of us when i say we would prefer to see a speed run rather than a no damage run.

but somehow it really scares me that we might influence you, because at the end of the day, you will be happiest if you do what you want.
Okay, I'm doing regular 100% hard then, and it just so happens that I didn't get any games for christmas  :? , so I'm going to start working on it now. AJ had 00:03:28 at the first save in his run, and the best I've been able to do so far is 03:25, and that was on my first try at a regular run  :) . I'm aiming for like 03:20 at the save, and it shouldn't be too long before I get it, because ZM has no stupid random factors :D . This is a nice break from fusion.
Oh, come on now...why not single-segment?  Wink

Hmm...now you've peaked my interest...I may have to single-segment this just because now...

/heads off to Grandma's for Christmas dinner

It does have some random factors, actually.
lol no way
Yeah, there's as many as fusion, they're just not as annoying/intrusive.
I've been working on seg 1 for for four freakin days, and have done it a bajillion times. My best time is 3:21, but it just so happend that on that try, the brinstar worm attacked an extra time, and that cost me about 4 seconds. That is the only random factor that really matters in this segment, because with all of the enemy random factors, I can get the same result (time) by doing different things, so they don't matter. I'm getting very mad at the brinstar worm, because it has ruined my three best tries (3:21, 3:22, and 3:22). I definantly used up all my luck in my fusion SS run.

By the way, I found a faster way to do the longbeam shortcut. You can destroy the first two blocks out of the three, the first time that you morph. You do this by shooting two shots the first time, and the second shot has to be shot right as you morph, so that it is close to the ground (like the third shot must be) . After you shoot twice, morph and roll, and the first two blocks will be gone. then just destroy the last block like usual. This is about two seconds faster than the regular way to do the long beam shortcut.
cool. was just thinking of your run and it was cool to see an update. keep it up.
Well, at some point I'll be doing a Hard 100% single segment run...but since I haven't played the game in month I decided to do a Normal 100% single segment to practice...

1:00:59 - and I was EXTREMELY rusty. Funny that on a rusty Normal run I tied AJs Hard 100% WR  :P
I too thought about doing this today but since I have no way of recording it, I might do it on a rom or just for myself. However. I usually take damage from the little critters in the room next to the morph ball bombs. You need to kill these to get out. Any way to kill them other than rolling into a ball? I take damage since I like to collect them all & then kill 'em with a single blast. Maybe 1 or 2 each time instead?

I sure wouldn't go for speed on this though :D And definitely not single-segment ;)

Edit: Well found a smart way to avoid the little critters. Just lay a few bombs in the begining & then go & stand right to the door. The critters can't jump that high. They just keep running back & forth. Hop down from time to time & lay a few bombs & they'll disappear. I'm now just outside Kraid after ~25 minutes. It's been a long time since I played this game seriously so no many fancy routes. Just Varia early so far.

Edit2: Finished it last night. 1:41:33 on Normal. LOTS of restarts so no single-segment. And only for personal pleasure ;)

Edit3: To Kridly: Good luck with doing this on hard in one try. Only way to do that is to play it extremely sae or have extreme knowledge about enemy movements & locations. And even then it'll be hard. Some segments for me could take well over 10 tries before I nailed them. Not to mention certain bosses like Ridley. I even got hit in the very first room :D Never happened before. This was certainly the most annoying game of Metroid I've ever played. But it was kinda cool to pull it off anyhow.
