Multiplayer Mode Select?

I have a question, since I've gotten online the only matches I've been in are battle matches. Sadly I've never played battle before, so I have a question. How do I choose which mode I want to play online with? There must be a way to pick survival.

If you are just playing random Wi-Fi matches, they are always going to be Battle mode. You can only choose the other six modes if you play in a Friend/Rival match.

so you start adding people to your friend list and hope that they add you. that's what i'm doing.
