More as a reminder to myself than anything, since this board's essentially dead anyway... you can use bombs on the hives your second time through to save missiles and go faster; about 8 bombs takes them out. Don't worry about replying, as I said, it's more a reminder in case I do another run. Thanks to matt for telling me to try a morphball only run, hehe.
Thread title:
a morphball only run? thats awesome (exept for the fact youll need to get out from time to time to shoot missles and speed boost) Rolling Eyes
lol no way
Don't ever need to speedboost in fact.. but yeah. And I've found a few problem areas that are, as far as I can tell, impossible without unmorphing for one reason or another. A big one is where you get the Unknown Item in Crateria (Plasma Beam); the item is half-submerged in water, so you can't get to it, then bombjump back out of the water... I have found that laying a bomb just right to it explodes while the "Unknown Item" thing is up, and it bounces you onto the statue's head, then from there you can potentially horizontally bombjump left back to dry land... I've done it on emu, but when I tried on my cart for some reason the bomb didn't bounce me and I didn't pursue it.
Another problem place I've noticed is jus after Ice Beam, in the horizontal corridor directly above it. After you skip the chozo statue (or get it if you're low on health, I suppose... you take damage more in mb runs :p) there's a large-ish lava pit with three of the jumping guys (what are they called?), and I haven't found a way across it without missiling the jumpers... they jump on proximity rather than on a set interval, so it's rather impossible to do it as far as I know. I'm only just at the room before the hanging larva before Ridley now (I'm doing Ridley first) and have thus far encountered no more troubling things. I will say this, though: this is one of the more fun challenges I've done so far.
Will edit post as more problems arise; I'm liking this run enough to maybe just change the topic title to "morphball runs" or something and edit the first post a bit. >_>
Cool idea :D I think I'll try a morphball run too. Not good at horizontal bombings though. Do you need those? I can only do upwards & diagonally atm. After doing the No-Damage idea (took about 15+ minutes longer than a normal 100% run for me), new ideas are always welcome :)

Edit: Alright I need to fix my horizontal skills. Or maybe just do some more forgiving unmorphing hehe.

Heh, yeah, you need to have major control over your bombing skills... I actually might record this just cause it's really fun and I think some people might enjoy it. I solved the problem of the Unknown Item in Crateria... the way I described doing it worked out rather well. Matt says he can do a run in like 1:02, but I dunno if he's talking about singleseg or what... if he's not, then I think my goal would be like 55 minutes or something, and if he is, then I would go for about 50. It would be on normal too. Anyway, I'll play around with the idea for a while... my first seg would be from the start to like before the hanging larva.
Also, I suppose I'd need to make a set of rules for this type of thing too. Eh. Whateva.
Any ideas on how to handle bosses like Ridley & Kraid? :)
lol no way
Oh, well you'd definitely have to unmorph for them... the way I figure it is the rules would be something like "can be unmorphed from the moment the battle starts to when the killing shot hits" or something.

Just a taste of how I handle the pirates:

...they're pretty hard, heh.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Holy crap man! Pie-rates should never take that much effort.
I used to do Morph Ball runs, too. Well, maybe half Morph Ball runs. It was mostly when I would mess something up in a normal speed run and instead of resetting right away I'd start screwing around. Never thought I'd see a serious Morph Ball run though.
Looking forward to seeing it.
just started a new file, and i made a first segment , where i get the bombs, and go to the save station in central brinstar in around 4:40

i recorded it, but my cheap capturecard cant record in any format besides avi. Rolling Eyes  thats what i get for buying a cheap card

But you still have a double post...
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.
Not any more, dammit!
lol no way
I usually end the first seg before the hanging larva... there's not really any really hard places in the seg until the unknown item in Crateria, and that's really really hard, which is why I think it will be more worth watching the seg if I do decent and still get that off.
whats with you and pointing out double posts? lol
They are rather annoying, you know...
lol no way
Actually, everyone here would likely point out a double post that's stupid and useless (whereas if the post updates an old topic it's ok), so I suppose that might be why he points them out. Maybe.
Finished my "Morphball only" run today. Took about 1:39 hours... Though I usually got up to fire the gun everytime a Space Pirate came near me so it wasn't 100% pure Morphball Only. & I did not do any fancy speed run tricks (except early Varia which I didn't need anyway. Not early at least) so I did not ever need to do more vertical & diagonal bomb jumps. No horizontals at all.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Cool, that's a great time all things considered. I'd also like to point out that I like new name for this topic.
Yeah think so too. All the morphing & rolling around really slows you down :) Getting up to shoot doors might be faster than laying a bomb near it so you bounce through. And all the Vertical Bombings? Geez. That slows you down a lot.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I swear I'd go (more) insane if I tried that. :?

The morph ball run I am (was?) working on has been halted on the seg that the map of the HBJ OF D0000M shows... you know, down there below those pirates in the door that's locked in hard mode. Not so much because of the HBJ OF D0000M; I can get past that room using a method other than the HBJ that works about 75% of the time. I can basically get to the room where you would begin charging the "escape shinespark", you know, the one where you have to roll under the area where you'd do the charging... yeah, I can get there with about 1 or 2 hits left about 1 out of 8 attempts, but then the next room is just annoying. I tried it about 10 times and then was like "blurg" and stopped, and now I'm recording a 9% hard run on the PAL rom to confirm or something... I dunno, but I'll prolly finish that sometime within the next week and then maybe I'll continue to work on the morF bawl run.
I'm curious though Alec... how many missiles/etanks etc. did you have? I believe I have like 1 super missile tank (so 2 supers), and like somewhere around 35 missiles, and 3 etanks. The 3 etanks is what's killing me, and I fear this run might require restarting with like 5 or 6 etanks. Mostly I'm wondering how many etanks you've got. :)

Edit: Should've mentioned that if I do decide to restart, I'd probably just go with recording that one. >_>
I think I collected 8 tanks which was kinda useless since I did not do much killing with bombs as you try. I got a bit over 100 missiles too. Collected almost everything I came into close contact with which too was quite useless :)
lol no way
I actually think it might be interesting to see how many tanks you could conveniently get in morph ball form. Anyway, on my "real" run I'll collect anywhere from 3 to 10 tanks, depending on how out of the way they are. I'd be willing to backtrack a few rooms to get them as long as I could stay in morphball form. This is becoming like the 10% hard SS runs I used to do; not so much for speed, but rather just to see if I can do it at all. Survival basically. The pirate segs are all just mad dashes to the next save point. >_>

Nah, that's nothing. I've seen a TRIPLE post one time! (Well, maybe not a triple post, but you know what I mean... Wink )

And you have to get the bombs before you completely be in morph-ball mode, right?
