OK, so you've got your nifty varia suit right after getting your bombs (see post by Pekod).  What next?  How about facing Kraid without going through all the hassle of turning the rail power on?

This isn't easy, but it's possible.

Right after you get access to Kraid (the area), instead of going the the right-hand side to activate the power rails, head left, to the hallway under the save point.

Make your way across to the the part where you can see a series of destructable blocks:

Now, hoist yourself into the crack, and make your way to the very edge of the block:

Set a bomb, and move slightly to the left.  As it goes off, hold left.  If you time it right, you should end up on the other block, as so:

Make your way to the last of the blocks.  This is where it starts to get tricky.  You need to position yourself as far as you can over the edge without actually falling off.

The idea here is to set two bombs in quick succesion, and, right before they go off, fall off the edge.  If you time it just right, you will "bounce" on the ceiling, and gain that extra bit of distance you need.  After you bounce, quickly hit and hold up-forward to grab onto the edge of the platform.

Congratulations, you may now face Kraid without turning on that troublesome rail power!

It seems really difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad.  The worst part is getting the ceiling bounce timing just right.  Save states help a lot, in that regard, but, so long as you have the Varia suit, they shouldn't be neccicary. (You just have to trek out of the the room and back to reset the destroy-able blocks).

Samus will love you!

That's really nice.

I finished Kraid without picking up the powergrip, (which was just a random attempt-I don't think skipping it speeds things up) but I did have to turn on the rail.  The rail works without the powergrip.

I'm sure you've noticed that the wave beam isn't actually needed for anything, and it's possible to pick up almost all of that Norfair stuff after Ridley.

Did you notice that the speed booster has a new feature?  I didn't want to spoil it for you, you'll eventually see the need for it if you keep playing.
