Metroids Are Jerks
Not really that far off-subject, but it's all been more or less entirely disproved already by the finale of MP3.  I had a very similar idea to Saber's about a year before on another Metroid forum (Metroid-Online, anyone?), but it all hinged on the connection between Metroids and Phazon which MP3 didn't make.  Now that Phazon is done-for, we can only hope for another Metroid game to answer those questions.

As far as the mating cycle being part of their DNA (since they were created artificially), that is something very interesting that could help explain the low numbers of evolved Metroids within the Hive at least... but still, I'm thinkin that something had to have happened to other surface-dwelling Larva Metroids.

imo it's a good thing phazon and metroids weren't "magically" connected.
to me, phazon was just some radioactive crap that mutated living forms (and rocks). Metroids don't need it to be awesome (prime is an exception but omegas pwn also and they're only 2D so far)
Metroids Are Jerks
Well, the only thing that made it seem like they were connected was the Metroid Prime itself.  I'd have liked to see just how it was created and connected to the Impact Crater/Leviathan Seed of Tallon IV.

There is no evidence to suggest that the Chozo used Metroids on Tallon IV or Zebes.

Where do you think the Metroids came from?

The metroids on Tallon IV and Zebes were ones that were under the possession of the Space Pirates, of course.  Prime has scans that discuss this, and it's kind of the central plot to Metroid (ZM) and Super Metroid.

At any rate, I think everyone's just reading way too much into the technical limitations of GameBoy games back then combined with game design (Metroid II would be a bit tedious a game if you had to kill a million metroids, methinks).

Additionally, there's most likely some story that takes place shortly before Metroid II that was don't know about: it seems unlikely to me that the Federation, as willing as it is to take the risks involved with studying the X Parasites, would go and order Samus to eradicate the entire population of a scientifically-valuable species like the metroids unless something downright apocalyptic nearly took place.  I mean, it seems more likely that if the Federation simply wanted to keep metroids out of the hands of the Space Pirates, they'd just set up a blockade around the planet or something, right?

It's prolly not what you were getting at, but purhaps the surface Metroids were destroyed by the GF, with Samus taking the more perilous role of killing them at their core.
Metroids Are Jerks
Yeah Goose, that's what I was getting at, there's just some missing story.  There's gotta be some reason the GF wants the Metroids dead for good, and Samus must have good reason to believe so as well.  There had to be more than 40 Metroids on SR388 prior to Samus landing simply for the fact that there were no Larva-stage Metroids on the planet to eat the X.  At this point though, no one knew Metroids could be used for good nor about their evolutions.  I'm with TJF on this; the GF must have done something to the surface Metroids, otherwise it makes no sense.  And again Goose has the right point: We're reading too much into the GB limitations.

In conclusion, M2 needs a remake.

NDS really is the platform to release it on, series-wise.  MZM was on GBA, and NDS is the GB's more-or-less successor, so a remade sequel fits with that role.  What's more, the Roman numeral choice in titling (as opposed to the regular numerals of the Prime subseries) lends itself to visually coinciding with the NDS logo.  Now that real problem:  At its launch, many DS games had subtitles utilizing "D" and "S" (Dawn of Souls being an oddity, as it's for GBA), and MII (ugh, Miis...) carries a similar subtitle, RoS.  Now, if the trend is still applicable, we'd have to figure something out for "D" (since "S" could stay as "Samus"), but I'm not in a mind right now to think of a synonym for "Return".  "Destruction of SR388" would sound good if it wasn't for that distinction belonging to Fusion; perhaps "Desolation of SR388"?

I wanna say I've forgotten something that I wanted to put down, but the only thing I can remember is that I needed an excuse to rally behind a RoS remake without it being a lame post.  Perhaps it was in thinking of something to respond to that I'm getting lost, since the first half of this post seems to fulfill both goals I guess I had (rallying and filibustering).

I'd just call it Metroid II DS.
Look, witty text!
Metroid II DS
The Return of the Return of Samus
red chamber dream
Something like that, yeah. :P
Metroids Are Jerks
Haha, I like Silly Goose's... but yeah, I don't see any reason to change the name to fit the Nintendo DS's titles.  Plus it was mostly early games that had the "DS" title afterwards.
red chamber dream
Well, they certainly should call it something different, especially if it's a remake... which it'd have to be for the average gamer to buy it. I suppose they could think up something along the lines of what they did with Zero Mission.
Metroids Are Jerks
Yeah, I see your point, but there's not a whole lotta reason to change it dramatically... it's pretty much the best (i.e. only real) subtitle of the series... but they prolly would change it up a bit, if they ever do a remake.

Metroid II: Dread of Samus

Well, there's two Skrees with one stone.

Anyway, y'all know I'm new here, so I'm not sure what qualifies for a sticky, but this thread seems interesting and on-topic enough to get thumbtack'd.
What if Metroid Dread and a remake of RoS are the same thing?
red chamber dream
There is no Metroid Dread in production.

There will be if a Nintendo higher-up runs across this thread.

*wrings hands*

Oh yes, they'll all agree... They'll have to... It's too ingenious not to... And when they do, the net phaaze can begin... *evil laughter*
Annoying
I could make a Metroid 5 fangame, after i finish my game first. And even if i make it, Nintendo would probably make a one with a completely different story.
Isn't ZM Metroid 5?

Metroid 1 (Metroid)
Metroid 2 (Metroid 2: Return of Samus)
Metroid 3 (Metroid: Super Mission)
Metroid 4 (Metroid: Fusion)
Metroid 5 (Metroid: Zero Mission)
red chamber dream
Zero Mission is a remake of the first Metroid game, so it doesn't count as Metroid 5.
