Other M seems have this looping nature to it when it comes to power-ups, at least for some (Diffusion Beam, Speed Boost for example).  You go forward, loop around, and at the end you get the item and then you're back a little behind where you originally were.  There's no "exploration" for power-ups, but for the most part, they put them where they put them.  Even the Varia Suit's stupid activation, I still like the area before you get it because it's different and mildly challenging the first time you go through it.  I wish I could fight the boss without the Varia suit, too.

As far as item exploration goes, Other M is basically micro-exploration.  Instead of focusing on path branching to find expansions, it's all about finding the nooks and crannies.

or remembering where those damn nooks and crannies are when you can finally go back for them. >_>
lol no way
That's why they put big blue dots on your map right where every item is. :)

Only after you beat the game. As the manual mentions, many items don't get blue dots until then -- I found quite a few of the unmarked ones, and got great satisfaction from it.

As for whether Metroid could still be awesome without Samus, only two words need be said: playable Ridley.

(Somebody make that game and then have Ridley freak out and panic when Samus shows up. I will laugh forever.)

Quote from tomatobob:
Honestly, even Prime isn't all that "Metroid" as far as our type is concerned when you get right down to it. We just made it fit our definition.

You are a wise man, t-bob.
I mean, I dont know about his own game, bt he should definitely be playable in the next SSB game (and Shinespark should be Samus' down B move rather than those useless bombs)

I'd imagine Ridley would have a great amount of fear for Samus (after all, she's "killed" him a total of 5 times, excluding his X-form) but he likely wouldnt show it like Samus did since he doesnt have human emotions.  It'd just be "fight or flight."
I suspect in the next Smash Bros we get a playable Anthony.  There's too much love for the guy for their not have him there.

Ridley's Flight Simulator.  It's a livin'!
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Anthony should absolutely be a Captain Falcon clone. And we all know what his taunt must be.
What would his Final Smash be then?

that big ass gun he uses
He'll save the next shot for the Princess.  Not that she'll need it.
Now that I think about it, a playable Ridley would be cool.  They could factor in the flying in the gameplay.  But it'd be kind hard to find enemies that are bigger than him or as powerful as he is.  Unless he fought bigass GF machines/weapons like Nightmare and the BOX.  Also it'd be hard to make Ridley gain upgrades unless he was trying to make himself a cyborg supersoldier.  Which would be pretty awesome, allowing Ridley to use his plasma cannon and getting armor.

Time bomb set get out fast!
Oo! Better yet -- Ridley Mode. It'd be like one of the extra modes you unlock in recent Castlevanias by beating the game. Instead of a character who starts out weak and becomes godly, you start out strong and stay that way; thus it's easy at first but gets quite hard. Imagine being Ridley in Prime and just tearing up Tallon IV. All you'd need would be alternative ways to beat the bosses without Samus's gimmicks.

And maybe when you're Ridley you can fight against Kraid and finally settle the debate about who would win in a fight!
One shall stand, one shall ball.
But that'd put mdb outta business!

i'd actually pay for that game to be made if that was the case...
whoever thinks kraid would win should just go die.
Ridley vs Phantoon, or Ridley vs Mother Brain 2.0, now those would be battles....

Of course, Ridley would have to run a lot faster and all the environments would either have to be completely open or just really big...
Armor Guardian
How would Ridley even fit through doors? He's too big.

He makes new doors ;)

he can fit. see: the Ridley clone in Fusion.
From what I remember, even in Fusion, Ridley was about 2-3 times the height of Smaus, and Samus is only a little shorter than the hatches.

Remember how he escapes when he's in "form 2" at the GFed training grounds?

Pretty sure this is the most likely answer.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
See, I think you could pull off having a Space Pirate going to some planet to do something and getting upgrades and such...
Or maybe part of the game would be the Space Pirate exploring the planet, while Ridley would fly to several planets and in space to wreak havoc.  The parts with the (Zebesian!) Space Pirate would focus more on exploration and upgrading, while the parts with Ridley would focus more on combat and destruction, but Ridley would upgrade a little too.

Squadron based exploration? lol I don't know if it would be fun but I had to post it.
