rocks, locks, and invisible blocks
I've been joking around for a while that Wii would be the version to solve 20%, but I think it's actually happening... As if t h e c u r r e n t y e a r wasn't stupid enough already, here I am to finish it off with a bang: Potential TAS-only 20% on the Japanese stand alone Wii release of Metroid Prime.
The idea is something I've floated around for a while "haha wouldn't it be so stupid if you could skip Varia on Wii by abusing the fact that IS works without Boost, the Magmoor heat damage is cut so much compared to GC [on easy mode], and the puffers drop ultras?". Well the other day I went and tested it and managed a 1 tank VMR, which has poor RNG on the early drops, and was basically done controller savestate:
Once I finished this I had the realization that "oh, well this is pointless, you need to scan the elevator post to use it and I'm suck in lightshow". But then I remembered, way way way back when people used inbounds infinite speed to collect Sun as an alternative to Thardus Dash, on the rare occation, this would happen:
And now today I finally sat down and decided to test, does activing an elevator like this, activate the hologram without needing to scan the post... and the answer is yes:
So of course, I connected them all together and here we are.
It's possible to, at the very least, skip Varia collecting only one tank in a TAS. With optimal drops and optimizations, I see no reason I couldn't bring this down to 0 tanks. Every other major aspect in 21% Wii has already been solved in a TAS setting... So 20% should be confirmed TAS-possible as long as I can bring this to the point where no energy tanks are required.
I'm sorry.
Oh, and of course, I will make a full controller savestate demonstration of this if I solve it completely.
Edit: Okay so another thing I just realized I need to solve is Monitor Station without unmorphing. Due to the amount of drops in this room, I wouldn't be surprised if you could just go around the room and still make it to the door in time. There's also potential to use a glitch where you can spring ball on a wall for more height. I'll look into this room too.
Edit: And now that's solved:
