Um it's very definitely not faster, you just do a WTR glitch and when the room secretizes you morph and infinite boost. I'll still make a video if you want though?
I think I'm going to put the actual TAS on hold for a while and look into skipping Varia.
Paraxade and I came up with a pretty smooth route that solves my whole Chozo dilemma. You don't really notice how much back and forth you do in Chozo until you sit down and think about it. Both in early game and late game, I was making huge trips around there with the old route. Going all the way to X-Ray and then back to fight Flaahgra, Going from World all the way to Lifegiver, etc. Anyway, I need to do a little testing to see how many tanks are really needed for a VMR. I'd imagine a TAS can get away with two, but I also need to collect Strength either on my way to Phendrana, or on my way back (way back I'll probably have collected the tank in the room beside the Phendrana elevator, so I'll most likely be doing it then).
Also I know it's probably been looked into a lot, but if people don't mind trying to come up with a way to climb Sun Tower without spider, that would be a huge time save in this route. I've messed around with it a little, and if there's any way to get onto the ruin gate, you can quickly get up from there using the bomb-able spider tracks and enemies. The only problem is getting that much height.
so; how would the route look like if you'd get 1 or 2 e tanks before vmr ? Maybe you could get it with 1 tank; should be tested in before hand if you ask me. Though i cant imagine it being done without e tanks at all, since rolling through the last tunnel alone takes you more than 100 energy, unless you go oob somewhere.
Also; if you dont find a way to do suntower inbounds you could probably do it from Oob and still save time with TAS speed.
Basically the route I had in mind was he would get two etanks - Main Plaza is probably a fast one, HotE/Training Chamber/Furnace are also fast - then after Ice Beam/X-Ray, instead of backtracking to fight Flaahgra, he'd exit out to Tallon Overworld and do VMR/get Wave/Boost, get the etank by the Phen elevator, and go back through the Chozo part of Magmoor to get Nature + Wild, exit through the front of the ruins to get Lifegiver, and then reenter Magmoor by Root Cave to get Plasma and continue. The main issue with the route is whether VMR is doable with that few tanks and whether or not there's a good way to get up Suntower without Spider.
As an alternative he could try picking up Wild on the first pass through Ruins - maybe after Morph Ball/PB, he wallcrawls through Vault to get to Suntower, climbs up quickly, fights the ghost, gets Wild, wallcrawls from Sunchamber out to Arboretum and continues from there. After going through Magmoor later on he'd just exit straight out to Main Plaza instead of going to Sunchamber. The issue there is that it introduces an ugly backtrack after the PB expansion and he'd have to fight the ghosts without Charge Beam.
For reference, Wild without Charge takes about 20-25 seconds longer than with. That's roughly the amount of time it takes to fight Flaahgra, isn't it? Wild without Charge sounds absurdly slow in passing, but it really isn't.
Things really need to be timed and tested, and I'm probably the only person capable of doing so(?), but I really don't want to do everything. As of now, I don't have a very clear idea of travel time between areas that we kind of don't take into account in non-TAS runs. Like I mentioned earlier, Chozo in the current route is disgustingly long, and I think my non-TAS experience had kind of given me tunnel vision about parts of the run like that. But another thing I'm needing to warp my head around is that going to different rooms isn't necessarily better. For example: getting from X-Ray to Magmoor takes a hell of a long time regardless of which way you go. It comes down to "going from X-Ray to Phendrana" in reality, and I'm not sure if Going through all those rooms in Tallon to get to Magmoor, and then from there to Phendrana, is even faster than going back through Chozo to Magmoor. The Tallon route has less familiar rooms (i.e. less "backtracking") but that doesn't mean it's actually faster.
Routing this game is a nightmare. Also this is mostly directed at Parax, but there is one final thing we can mess with, neither of us has put all that much effort into a TAS route that doesn't get the early PB, we should take into consideration that getting Power Bombs, X-Ray, and Ice Beam later in the run could be better.
Hold up, why don't you get Main Plaza E Tank, wall crawl from Main Plaza to Vault>Transport to Magmoor>Suntower and door warp into Suntower Access? This gets 1/2 (2 might not even be necessary) tanks and gets you to wild without fighting flaahgra.
Because with the route we were thinking of, you come into Chozo from Magmoor, and that wallcrawl would require going all the way to Main Plaza and then all the way back. Even if that still ends up being a faster route in the long run, that sounds incredibly slow compared to climbing Sun Tower inbounds.
I was thinking that too, just earlier today. That's what I was hinting towards when I said a route that doesn't do IBBF or get X-Ray early. I actually wrote out a route that for this a while ago, not sure what thread it was posted in though..
hmm, I thought Observatory was different in that you clip through a backface. But nope, Observatory does indeed involve clipping straight through a solid wall.
Would still like to see a video of this PPC thing.
