Speedrunner
I see segmented runs is not are popular anymore. But yeah game like Super Metroid and Metroid fusion is nearly pointless segmented anymore because SS runs will be faster.

But many nice category will death if you not going segmented. My one favorite Prime run all around is 22% hard 1:28 by smilingjack. This run is old like grandmother, but its still extremely optimize year 2005 skills levels. 21% might be also accetable segmented only. Even t3 & darnyoshi make awesome 21% SS time, but its still can´t counted speedruns, because this category is simply too hard and inconsistent speedrun without using segments. But using segments its migth very cool looking and see final time like sub 2 hours 21% items.

So i´ll hope peoples will interested make segmented runs too. I´ll personally like watch segmented streams too especially if yours skill level is something like close T3.
You know, for all the people talking about how much they like segmented runs in spite of the rest of the speedrunning community, there are very few people who have ever actually done a planned segmented run. If you take a gander at the segmented any% leaderboards, you'll find that ~95% of the runs on that page are either casual playthroughs, SS runs, or near-SS runs with maybe one segment redone.

Please do not misinterpret me. What R_Web, Metroid177, and Daryoshi are doing is seriously wonderful. I have watched all of them stream segmented attempts and I have watched their segmented videos on Youtube. I find them just as interesting as SS runs and I would watch other people do them even if they aren't going for as high a level of optimization.

But the part that bothers me is that there's such a disconnect between how many people claim to care a lot about segmented runs and the number of people who have actually done a segmented run. I don't think it's a stretch to say that 90% of the community could go get a segmented PB tomorrow if they wanted to. Yes, 90% of the community could PB in a day in a supposedly highly important category, a category considered important enough that I received quite a lot of backlash for being reluctant to include it on the leaderboards despite the fact that the last time anybody has even done a planned segmented speedrun was, I believe, Master-88's 1:08 which he finished nearly two years ago. Who the hell actually cares about times that were "SS but I redid the final bosses" or "SS but I reset at Landing Site"?

There is no competition in segmented Metroid Prime speedrunning and there hasn't been for many years.
I started a semi-serious segmented run of zero mission 100%...

...until we found out that in-game time for zero mission was completely stupid and broken :c
Plenty of people have started segmented runs before, it's just that few people actually finish them. Actually doing a segmented run requires patience most people don't have.

If the only reasons to count things as categories was the presence or facilitation of competition, 22% would be the "official" low% still. By still keeping the times listed, you encourage people to come in the future and do it.
Other M is a terrible game.

i do, if it has a wr time. getting the any% time lower is the only thing that matters to me in prime. frankly i'm amazed anyone cares about anything else, besides maybe getting a fast 21%.

Okay wow this got off topic really fast didn't it? So here's my sad attempt to get back on topic.

Andy how's SJF left optimizing been treating you? Unless you've already gotten past that which why the hell didn't you update us on that if that's the case.

I'm not saying this isn't an important discussion but could we at least split what doesn't belong here into a thread of it's own?

i could be wrong about this but doesn't releasing L after a dash hop allow you to gain more speed? it looks like you're holding L the entire time during the dash to space jump.

that's only if you're holding a direction, and you can only really bend forwards after pressing L and R, which would make me miss the upgrade.

Edit: I was able to dash with a bit better of an angle to allow me build speed a little and still hit the upgrade, it didn't save any time though.
Why don't you use the few frames to aim toward the scan point instead of fooling around?
what fooling around? and afaik he dashed through the door on the first possible frame

no tdk, i'm pretty sure he intentionally sat there and fooled around, i mean it's a tas so you have extra time right?
MP2 also a bit MP1 speedrunning
that looks pretty good, i thought its gonna look weird and i guess i was right with that.

what fooling around exactly? I don't even see any fooling around

Does anyone have strat ideas for the following rooms? All I can really come up with right now is doing basically the same movement as non-TAS runs. I can probably scan/combat dash through a few doors though?

Lots of r-dashes; after spacejump try to get the first dash as soon as possible, after you reach the end of that room with the ship with your first dash, try dashing into the next door to make the beetles come up as soon as possible, while getting into position for your next dash  as soon as possible, maybe you can skip the dash the non tas runs do off of the beetles. (maybe by bouncing onto a wall?) then dash off of the beetles through the door into the next room, facing the other direction as non tas runs do, so you can keep all of your momentum eventually, i think you can bend R dashes forward while accelerating even beyond normal dash speed instead of losing speed which happens for norma dashes. for the room after tallon canyon im not sure, maybe damage boosting off of something or again dashing through the door.

You look up and to the left and shoot the arm cannon, instead of just turning to the left all the way? I don't know it just seemed un optimized >.>

Locking onto the scan allows me to turn left a lot more in one frame than not locking onto it. Also I need to be locked onto a disappearing target to cut my jump's height short and still go in the direction I want to be moving in, which is why I took the scan visor off by shooting. If I had just turned to the scan point, I would be standing still on the ship. The strat I used allowed me to jump to the back corner of the ship while moving my view towards the scan point and landing far sooner than a normal jump.
Cool. I'm an idiot.

(And i only now noticed that my post seemed REALLY rude. Sorry about that :()

I just looked up this video for reference. I'm about 1 second faster. most of the time save came from a better dash to the actual upgrade, but yeah, the strat I used before the first dash was also a few frames better.
Nice dude. So killer :D

Yeah, that part is pretty iffy, i still feel like theres a little more time to save. Maybe if you jump forward at 0:13 instead of turning like that; i can imagine it being faster if youre further away from the scan spot when dashing.

Edit: that might screw up your angle for the dash to the upgrade, though.

Edit2: i thought you made a new attempt and improved your old vid with thats second video, so forget what i said.

Clearly it's faster to get OoB in Gully and wallcrawl to the elevator. Clearly.
