Unless you beat the game before.
Seriously why not just complete the game once on emulator, erase the file and then start the TAS?

EDIT: Also doesn't the R-dash for SJF save more time than the Scan-dash. (I'm talking about the R-dash off the scan point btw.)

i think its about the same, the way he did it, but i could be wrong

if it is faster its only by milliseconds

always move fast
it could be a trick with perspective or something, but r-dashes always seemed to move slower than regular dashes (note: i have absolutely no data to back that up).  if that's the case though, then regular scan dash is definitely faster.  if you press r after the dash starts, you can still look around and lock onto a different scan point as you land (possibly while you're still flying, don't remember).  i attached a video from like 5 years ago where i was playing around with this if you have anything more recent to compare it to (also consider a tas would do this so much faster).

like bartendorsparky i have nothing to back this up but i almost sure r-dashing, scan-dashing and dashing of enemies is all the same speed other then when landing r-dashing can be slow if you dont let go of r before you land
probably just depends on the situation. i'm sure there'll be times when r-dashing is better for some reason.

soo is that TAS being worked on or are people still discussing how it will be done?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I have left the discussion phase and am definitely working on a TAS of urmom.
rocks, locks, and invisible blocks
good to know tomatobob but if i were you i wouldn't be proud of saying that
i would be.
ANKOKU
So long as it involves urmom, Bio enjoys it.
I run this here hotel of an evening
what about dash extensions? if you jump right as you land from a dash you won't lose much momentum. amount of momentum lost depends on how long you're on the ground before jumping again so it stands to reason that optimized you wouldn't lose much at all. can't imagine it'd be insanely useful but it might help in some areas

i climax'd on urmom

I'm sure you did....
I think I will attempt to make a run of this.  however since I will unlikley be able to sync the video for playback I'll just try to go for fastest time. Dashing in this seems to be extremely easy with save states and frame advance.  I really hope playback stability is improved, cause right now I instantly desync
my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
in the meantime you could test tricks and stuff. having practiced all will make the eventual TAS easier to do.
Might as well share my post from tasvideos:

I thought I'd update on a few tricks I've learned.

With precision dashing samus can hit a small incline and gehtto jump while dashing, the height is high enough to clear "normal" jump height ledges.

an example of this is a scan dash off the ship during the intro frigate, you hit a slope in the center of the second set of 6 shot orbs. samus will dash to the side (while locked on press left/right and jump for one frame, then just hold left/right for 6 frames, on the 7th frame either let go of all lock on, or press r, I actually find that holding r gives more speed, though menuvering is very difficult as you cannot bend the dash)

in any case, in 1 single dash, I have managed to get from the slop all the way up the second incline leading to the door. which leads me to my next discovery.

If you jump the same frame that you land, samus keeps ALL of her dash speed. much like "skipping" stones, except you only stop when you hit a wall.

I also find firing missiles to be much faster (obviously) and can fire 1 missile every 10 or so frames. I was ready to pass out last night while fighting the PQ so I wans't counting, but I realized that I was firing REALLY fast.

I really hope that recodring playback becomes more stable. Also in regards to performence. I'm getting 46-53 fps in the frigate landing pad. however once inside I have a blazing 60fps. and even though I'm on auto fps, it feels as if the game is playinjg too fast sometimes. though it might just be that I was used to frame advancing
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
Yeah, I was just reading that.  I've done that skipping in MP2, but didn't know that you could maintain all momentum at frame precision, because it's hard to do on console.  I really can't wait to see TAS use that kind of trick -- I'd think it'd look pretty funny.

Also thinking, I know you can actually dash sort of downward if you dash a little after normally jumping.  I wonder if it might be used in certain cases for initiating the scan dash hopping...

getting there...
Usually, I'm against TAS's, but I would love this run. I can't wait to see what the TASers do with this game.

I think it would only motivate runners to be better, and hell, we might discover a few tricks along the way. :)
Speedrunner
I can,t wait see TAS run.

I´ll hope someone will did real progress with this. We know sub hour is surely possible on TAS. Let see can someone did game under 50 minutes. I think sub 50 might be TAS possible.

Did TAS kill Metroid Prime 2nd form in 2 round? 3 round is absolutely max on console.
Um... no it'll be 3 round even in the TAS, 2 rounds can get rid of at least two-thirds of his health at the max.
I'm pretty sure that I'll did the game in under 45 minutes

I wouldn't be too surprised if TAS could get it down to two rounds actually, gonna have to wait and see.

MP2 also a bit MP1 speedrunning
i think we cant get the "perfect" time before we dont have the perfect route....
there is a theory of skipping the varia suit with 2 or less energy tanks in PAL that would mean that you can safe around 2 minutes. its easier because the preeds in magmoor are often dropping ultra energy capsules so you can skip one or two energy tanks.
and you can brake the shields of the omega pirate with a power bomb that will also safe time. there are also tons of unknown dashes possible in TAS on PAL i think the endtime of the PAL TAS will be pretty close to the NTSC endtime.

another thing:
im pretty sure that we cant get the perfect time by far i think it is around 43-47 minutes because there are so much possebilities to save huge amounts of time
before we should start the TAS we must collect all known tricks and dashes i found a lot new tricks (one can safe around 1-2 seconds in the frigate escape).
rocks, locks, and invisible blocks
ok, I don't know how many people or if any people know about this already, but if you press B twice before dashing on system it tends to give you a little more speed, well in a TAS it gives alot more speed, I was able to hit the wall beside the door to gully when dashing off the ship to get space jump
