lol, yeah, always a good idea to make it look better on os x/other unices, because windoze is not known at all for its interface. bravo.

He he he...

I've always thought Windows had a nice interface. It doesn't compare to OS X of course, but it was always nicer than GTK+ or Qt for Unix

I think the problems I had are the fault of wxWidgets, so maybe I'll spend some time now trying to make patches since the developers don't seem interested in doing it themselves.

If I can ever get Qt to work on Mac, I think I might switch though. I wonder if Qt is actually native on Mac. I've had no success running any application I've compiled with Qt/Mac on PearPC. A friend with a real Mac told me it didn't work on his either, so I must be doing something wrong. Don't know what though, since my app works great on Windows and Linux. I thought there was a problem with the property list. It doesn't tell it that Carbon is required like you have to do for wxWidgets apps, but I changed the file and it still didn't work.

I was looking at phonymike's Super Metroid SRAM editor yesterday. It comes with source, but it windows only. Maybe it's time for a cross-platform Super Metroid SRAM editor. If I could only figure out how to get Qt/Mac working...
Hey, Wave and Ice can't both be selected. Don't try to kill off the Ice-Wave combo.

You can select it both in the raw tab.

This is a feature, not a bug. :-)

Also what the last guy said, you can select them both in the raw tab, but I didn't want impossible passwords being generated in the two main tabs.

Come to think of it, it should do more stuff like that. You shouldn't be allowed to raise the statues if you haven't killed the bosses either. Then again, the game does that for Kraid, but I think it's a bug. I didn't notice any ill effects from having them both on, but I didn't test very long either. Maybe I should mimic the game's own behaviour here to be safe.
If anyone has an OS X Mac with 10.2.8 or better, could you maybe test a different app for me?

I'm trying to start using Qt/4, but it's not been going too well so far. I finally have an app that will run in PearPC, but part of the display is messed up. I'm not sure why, but it would be helpful to confirm that it happens on a real Mac.

The binary is at http://games.technoplaza.net/temp/ggencoder.tar.bz2
It looks like http://games.technoplaza.net/temp/ggencoder.png on my PearPC install. I don't really know why the middle one is messed up, but if you resize the window, all the text fields will get ruined.

If I can get Qt/4 to work on Mac, I'll probably start working on a Super Metroid SRAM editor, one that's cross-platform and cross-emulator. So there's an incentive to all lovers of cheat programs that hate those stupid Windows-only editors.

BTW: I know the menu is blank, too. I don't know why that is either, but I don't create a Menubar in Windows or Linux either, so I'll probably have to play with that. You can still kill the app with the red button.

TIA
i'm getting a white window under 10.4.2 (8C46). nothing in it. no effect when clicking in it/resizing it.

Stupid Qt. You shouldn't have to recompile every application for every version of OS X.

Well, if I can't compile usable binaries, I guess Qt is not going to be of any use to me.

Thanks.
i wouldn't think that 10.2 or at the latest 10.3 would require anything different. 10.0 and 10.1 you should just ignore.
How about a Java version for use on the web?

wxWidgets will be dropping support for 10.2 in their next major release. I wouldn't care about 10.2 except for two things.

a) I bought a copy to test my apps with in PearPC
b) SourceForge only has 10.1 and 10.2 Server.

Even if I had a copy of Panther, PearPC took 12+ hours to compile wxWidgets, which takes about 40 minutes on the SourceForge Mac. Qt/4 takes over 3 hours to compile on the SourceForge mac, which means it would take roughly 2 days 6 hours on PearPC, assuming I didn't want to use my machine at all in those 2 days and 6 hours. And I'm not sure I would really trust binaries developed on a fake Mac. It looks like it works well, but who's to know for sure, and I would have no way of testing for problems.

If SF would get a copy of 10.3 or 10.4 and put it up, then I would have a way in. I could probably get a copy of Panther to test with in PearPC, and I could trust the binaries, plus it wouldn't take 2 days 6 hours.

I had a guy tell me on email today that Qt/4 only works with Panther or Tiger, but Trolltech's page says it's been tested to work with 10.2.8. Maybe he is right.

I guess I will go bug sourceforge about getting a 10.3 Mac.

Sigh. I really wanted to try Qt/4 for my next app. So much for 'the leading framework for native cross-platform application development.' (a Quote from Trolltech's website).

Thanks for testing for me. I appreciate it.

People don't seem to like Java. I don't know why. I love Java, and would switch back to Java in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, most platforms don't have Java support built-in, and downloading a VM is a hassle. With wxWidgets or Qt, I can stick the libraries in with the app.

Whenever I have built Java apps before, people complain about them. Why'd you make it in Java? I don't want to download a 20 MB VM.

People also think Java is slow. For some things sure, but not what I do. Well, my newsreader program in Java was slow, but it could probably be improved upon.

Java doesn't look native (except on OS X) either. People don't like that either, and I have to agree on that point. I don't mind the Java look and feel, but you have to admit, Apple did Sun a huge favor by porting their look and feel to Apple's VM.

As for the app that Nate tested for me, there was a Java version before there was a Qt version. It's up right now at http://games.technoplaza.net/ggencoder/java/. An applet, too, so you can use it on the web. I've always liked that idea myself. But unless you write for Java 1.1, people still need a VM. Java 1.1 is not so nice; pre Swing and all.

-------

Were you saying you think I should port the password generator to Java so it will on the web? I could, but I don't think I will (at least right now). Tthere is another Metroid password generator written in Javascript. You can find it at http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/PasswordGenerators.html
Of course it doesn't compare to mine... :-)

When I was looking at adding more restrictions, I realized there are dozens of invalid combinations that can be created already. It would take tons of new code to check all the valid possibilities, and I don't really want to make it do that.

So I've reversed my position. The Ice + Wace beam should be selectable on the first tab.

Version 0.94 which I just released implements this. All Items now gives you the Ice + Wave beam, too. The 'perfect password' still only uses the Ice Beam, though you can add the Wave Beam if you want.

Looks like they just updated. I sent them a message to fix it. In the meantime, the old version is still up
