With that out of the way, baby be gentle if I should still happen to break any rules with this post/topic. Here goes.

I'm sure a lot of you are already aware of MetCon's existence by now. I'm not making this to take advantage of an endorsement by trying to steal all of the hackers from this board and herd them into ours so we can have one big circle-jerk (as fun as that sounds). I see this more as a chance for Metroid hacking knowledge and information as a whole to improve and become more readily available to anybody who shares our interests but couldn't quite get their foot in the door. More than anything, I'm making this post out to all hackers who have contributed over the years and urging them to consider offering any content that they're willing to share publically so we can work towards having most of what's been discovered so far under one collective and available to newcomers as a learning resource, and to veterans as a reference library.

But that ain't gonna work if I'm the only loonie who would like to see this happen. I'm not gonna go on a multi-page shpiel about why you should join the MetCon forum and abandon this place, but I would like all of you to at least take a look at it and consider posting there in conjunction with your activities here. That's all I've really got to say about that. Any more and I'd just be rambling more than I already have:

I don't know why people insist that there's any controversy here. It's stupid petty squabbling. Go to any Metroid site you want, and we'll be here when you want to hang out with us. If MetConst ends up being the #1 place to go for Metroid hacking, I doubt we'll blacklist it or pretend it isn't there, so go nuts.

As always, i'm hesitant to join new forums.  I have a recent history of joining and never posting much, even when I have an interest in the forum.  I guess I'm just no good with joining new forums, which is one reason I haven't moved there yet.  Second would be how this place is still more active for hacking.  Perhaps if the site grows more and more (or we're essentially forced to move from m2k2 wanting us hackers to move) I may finally join but for now, I'm staying put.

With the forums being down the past day or two...  I had to get me my metroid hacking fix. aiwebs_017

I had stumbled upon that forum a couple times before, but I never registered, only lurked...  Then, yesterday, I tried googling for it - and not recalling it's name I started googling for usernames that I was sure were registered here and at the same place...  aiwebs_012  Until I finally found it. *ahhhh*

That was pretty hard to find.... 

I'll think about it.  And if this forum should go down again - I've got that one bookmarked.


Edit: It seems to me that a lot of cross posting would be going on.  So, depending on where someone would post a new topic first - they'd copy and past the same thing at the other forum.

There's nothing wrong with that...  -I'm just saying.  Embarassed

That is kind of what we're trying to do here. We want that to become the hacking forum because having two hacking boards on m2k2 does not feel very m2k2-y.

Also since both boards are SMF there may possibly be a way to move topics from here to there?

For the record, I'm not criticizing MetConst. I think it makes more sense to have a different site be the primary reference for Metroid hacking. If m2k2 one day no longer has nor needs the hacks sections, that's okay with me. I'll just have to visit two sites now instead of one.

i agree 100% with what acheron said in his first post. metroid 2002's hacks boards aren't going anywhere any time soon, but feel free to post at metroid construction instead if you'd like. i don't anticipate ever moving posts over though.

It's a tough call in one respect. Yeah, I could take the time to scour every topic in this board and collect every patch and every bit of good information that's been posted here in its lifetime, and I probably will eventually if enough people don't chip in on their own - after that, I guess it's a matter of removing anything that anybody may not want posted. I don't want to step on any toes.

I know for a fact that the whole thing would be a giant pile of yuck to sort through and rearrange (mostly because of the difference in the board structures between each forum, and the fact that the table data is extracted as a whole through SMF. We'd be sorting through literally the entire history of Metroid 2002 Forums, not just hack stuff.) It's most likely not worth it just for the sake of porting one forum's contents to another. Not entirely sure what happens to unregistered usernames, I've never done it before. :P

It does happen, and it's happening so as we speak, but it's not the problem you might think. Some of us have formally removed ourselves from posting on M2K2's hacks boards (myself included) and instead post replies over there, while the people who've never heard of or don't visit MetConst for the sake of visiting it post comments here. The people who cross-posted topics do it solely to hit both audiences these days. Wink

I think it'd make more sense to just start the SMILE topic from scratch.  Most of the questions have been answered numerous times, but the topic is so big that everybody just asks again anyway, so it's not like all of the old pages are even read anyway. My point being that there isn't really anything here that is that desperate to be transferred over.

What it really needs is the whole MoonEdit thing, or it's MetConst equivalent, to be comprehensive.  The only time that everybody will move there, is when it's the better site for hacking knowledge - particularly the basics.

Blatant spam and "visit my site plz" threads are never going to be okay, in small part because none of those sites ever offer anything Metroid-related that m2k2 doesn't already have. MetConst might actually do that for hacking, and it doesn't really make sense for m2k2 to be the #1 Metroid hacking resource anyway, at least imo.

Occasionally you may see a mod make an exception to the rule. This is because we are, in fact, intelligent human beings with the power to reason and a capacity for understanding why a rule exists, and when violating it could do some good. Generally, rules should be upheld, but almost no rule is ever right all the time.

(Note: this is absolutely not any sort of permissive approval for advertising fan sites. I don't have that kind of power anyway.)

I don't want to bury the SMILE thread because there is some useful information scattered in there. I could take a couple hours and prune it of the crappy posts, but I don't know that I'm the best judge of what is or isn't crappy. I personally think a Wiki with barely-limited editing access would be the best way to archive information about SMILE usage; no need for extra software, and permission granted to anyone who's just been around for long enough for us to know they won't delete everything just to be a jerk.

...so the old stuff will still be here for record purposes - at least until somebody gives it a proper 'pruning'.  I was just stating that since most people just ask the question again anyway, it won't hurt to just make a completely new thread on MetConst for SMILE, rather than trying any form of merge.

Anywho, Metconst is still alittle young, but many of the members are trying to contribute to make the site a good hacking resource.  But come on, you guys already knew that! I'm gonna try and hit on a few points that haven't gotten said yet!

-I tend to hang out in the Off-Topic board alot myself, and what silly shenanigans we have! XD
-Bloodsonic is our pet art slave, and has contributed many awesome pictures that many of us use for avatars. (he drew that picachu/strawberry pic I currently use)
-We also have a "General Hacks Idea" topic, where you can tell people about ideas you might want to put into your hack.

Metconst is a pretty serious forum, but we have our fun and silly moments. :P

You might actually be able to bury the thread soon enough. IIRC Grime and some others have read through the entire thing and picked out several giant blocks worth of useful information (i.e. questions that have been answered several times, other small but still-important details, etc.) All that really remains is that the information is sorted through, rearranged accordingly, and posted, which is a process that still happens to be in the works!
