At this point, nice as it'd be, it's just not worth it. If someone in the future wants to take Aegis and use that sort of black magic trickery to DMantra-size it, they're free to do so. I simply can't deal with this thing sitting around unfinished any longer.
I can comfortably and confidently claim now that this game is truly going to be released some time this year for a very simple reason: I'm out of fucking ROM space to work in. Bank $7F is completely full. So, you know, that's good.
I'm going to assume $7F is a typo, since that section of RAM is reserved for DMA transfers of room tilemaps (tiledata, bts, etc). LOL
Aegis is the "Chinese Democracy" of SM hacks in terms of how long it pends. Hopefully, when and if it sees the light of day, it will be a little better received.
Acheron, thank you so much for coming back and completing this. :)
I remember eagerly awaiting Aegis back in 2008, when I was living in California. Flash forward 3 years; I've graduated, moved to China, moved to Washington DC, got married, got a career, and now I'm finally going to get to play Aegis! I still check back in on these forums once every 6-9 months to see if Super Metroid Aegis has moved to the Now Playing section. :)
To be honest, I really don't care if the escape sequence is special. I loved Eris. Loved it to bits. But when I killed Mother Brain, I stopped. It's the journey that's the fun part in Metroid, not the destination. :) And I can't wait to embark on the journey you've made for us.
When this releases, I'm going to cancel my weekend plans, buy myself a nice bottle of wine, and cozy up in bed with my laptop for a weekend. A little celebration, a toast to all your effort. Please know that by actually finishing this and putting it out there, you've done something pretty excellent that will put a smile on the face of thousands of people all over the world. Thanks for that. :)
Well, it's nice to come back here in a long while and find out you're still making decent progress. I'm not going to complain about how this is on my wait list for ages (no pun intended), I've waited much longer for other stuff to come out.

By other stuff, that included FF13 (and look how that turned out after three years of waiting) and currently, Half-Life 2 Episode Three and the Falcom-designed remake of Ys IV (it's for the new PS Vita). *must resist Valve Time joke*
Umm. Acheron, are you still working on this? If the project is dead it is better to say it than keeping us waiting for it. Is it that you do not have time or that you are stuck at some programming problem or something? We would all love to play this awesome hack.
The last Acheron said was that he was busy with real life stuff, but that it was still being worked on. It'll be released when it's finished, and there's currently no time scale for that.
To be honest, what 'should' be done with it is solely the decision of the creator. Also, there are no guarantees that if somebody else were to take over, you would be playing the creator's vision.
If I understand it correctly, the creator's vision is fully implemented already -- all that's left is some custom music. I'm planning to play the damn thing on mute, anyway, so a delay approaching half a decade over the musical score seems a little pointless.
