Okay, I remember on Nate's site, that the Geothermal Core without Boost was unknown on how it works, but can be done.  I think I have a good explanation.

The reason why it moves quite slowly but sureley and does not require a boost is because the designers accidentaly made the spinner extra wide, this being able to move while in the socket.  This is the reason of why it moves upwards so slowly.  Moving in the Morph Ball plainly is not merely as fast as boosting, thus the slow rise.
Thread title:
I agree that it works because you can move the morph ball while in the slot, but I'm not sure if it's because the slot is "extra wide". Unless I'm mistaken, you can't spin all the spinners in Geothermal Core this way, which is what makes a no-boost game so hard. I would imagine that each slot is of equal dimensions, as it makes sense that the programmers would build one then copy and paste to get the rest, making them exactly the same size. However, the only other place I can think the bug could be in is code attached to the spinner to prevent the morph ball rolling whilst in the spinner, which would also likely be re-used from spinner to spinner. Hence, the mystery of why the trick only seems to work in certain spinners. No-one can work out why what works in one spinner doesn't in another spinner that should be all rights be perfectly indenticle. Ultimately, your theory is as likely as any other right now.

Myself, I refuse to try to guess until I've at least looked into a no-boost game myself.
my only guess is that the physics code for getting the ball stuck in the spinner changes based on the dimensions of the spinner, i.e. the taller the spinner, the harder the "grip" on the ball. thus, the shortest spinner is also the most lenient in terms of free movement.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Not to be a spoilsport, but is that poll really neccesary?
