Have a look at this article from the Hollywood Reporter... Shocked

Quote:
John Woo has optioned Nintendo's best-selling video game franchise "Metroid" for the big screen. It's the latest move demonstrating the director's commitment to interactive entertainment properties because it comes as Woo is developing three original titles at his Tiger Hill video game studio using Hollywood talent.

Woo will produce the sci-fi movie and has the option to direct. Terence Chang and Brad Foxhoven will share production responsibilities. Lion Rock Prods.' Suzanne Zizzi also is attached to the project.

Foxhoven said the plan is to release the first film before 2006. "Everyone involved is looking at this as a big-budget picture," Foxhoven said. "We see a tremendous opportunity to launch a film franchise with Nintendo as a partner."

Nintendo's "Metroid" has appeared in various incarnations since its introduction in 1986, with cumulative worldwide sales of 10 million-12 million. Each gives fans the chance to experience the suspense, mystery and excitement of space exploration.

"We are very fortunate that there is such an extensive amount of material to draw upon for the film due to there being so many iterations of the game over the years," Woo said.

The movie will center on the origins of the game's female protagonist, sexy bounty hunter Samus Aran, and relate her adventures battling the insidious life-sucking Metroids and their controlling force, Mother Brain.

"We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property," Foxhoven said. "As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy."

Chang emphasized that the popularity of these video games not only provides great source material for the film but helps with the awareness factor when the film is distributed overseas.

"Gaming is huge in both Europe and Japan and is starting to gain momentum in China -- so we are not only going to see interest domestically but also on a worldwide basis for these films," Chang said. "These properties are really going mainstream."

Woo added: "This type of story has a proven track record of success with film audiences."

This is the second attempt to bring Samus to the big screen. Warren Zide and Craig Perry of Zide/Perry Entertainment optioned the film rights for "Metroid" in January 2003 but let them expire. Tiger Hill stepped in and optioned the movie from Nintendo when it became available again.

Nintendo will unveil its eighth "Metroid" game, "Metroid Prime 2," at its E3 press conference May 11. As is typical of the video game industry, the company will be distributing limited versions of the game (referred to as a playable demo) to select industry professionals before the game ships for the GameCube platform in November.

The first "Metroid" product was on the now-defunct Nintendo Entertainment System. Realizing the value of owning such a recognizable brand, Nintendo relaunched the "Metroid" franchise with the high-profile release of "Metroid Prime" in November 2002 on its GameCube platform. Other titles, all of which have been best sellers, maintained the franchise's reputation for impressive 3-D graphics and engrossing battle scenes.

Tiger Hill is overseeing development of three original games, the first of which will ship in late 2005, with the remaining two hitting shelves in late 2006. Woo will direct the games' cinematics, oversee the story and voice talent, supervise motion capture and manage the character designs.

"We are bringing in top-notch Hollywood talent to our games due to John's influence and connections," Foxhoven said. Referring to "Max Payne" and "The Getaway," among others, he added, "Many games have already borrowed from John's films, so it was a natural progression for John to work on video games himself."

Tiger Hill has a multiyear first-look deal with Sega and is developing a game for the publisher but also is developing at least one additional game for another publisher. Details on two of the games are expected to be unveiled at E3.

Woo is repped by Endeavor.

What do you people think of this? It seems a little late to be an April Fool's joke, so is this true? If so, what do you reckon?
Myself, I'm not too sure about this...I mean, Metroid, as awesome a game series as it is, doesn't seem like it would make for a gripping movie...I mean, Samus walking around on her own for around ten hours, just shooting things? :? I can't see where the characterisation and plot will come from, not unless they make major changes to the Metroid formula. The other point is about John Woo...OK, so he's a legend in Hong Kong, but his US stuff, barring Face/Off, have all been met with critical scorn - Paycheck with Ben Affleck, anyone? I certainly don't want yet another dud videogame adaptation on our hands, especially when it'll tarnish the Metroid name so badly. What do you all think of this bizarre news?

That line scares me, considering that's not staying true to the game at all.

Wouldn't that line imply that Samus too was competing for control of the galaxy? Wow. I never had Samus figured for a megalomaniacal villain.
Another concerning point is raised by the line "sexy bounty hunter Samus Aran"...I really can't imagine any film treating the issue of Samus being a woman with any kind of tact. I mean, in the games, part of her appeal is her mystery, and the fact that you only get to see her right at the end. If they made a film, they'd want to cast an attractive young actress in the role, and that would mean that they'd want her out of the suit a lot (if not most) of the time, flashing her bosoms whenever the opportunity arose...that's just not Samus, is it? :?

Hmm 3 new Metroid games from an outside company? Stick to the movie if anything :)

I say the same thing as I did at Samus.co.uk.

It can't be good because there's noone cool enough to play Samus.
Put a poll in.  Q. What do you think? A. True. False.  Unsure.
I might see it but I doubt its going to be good. Look at it this way

Super Mario Bros. = sucked
Resident Evil = sucked
House of the dead = sucked
Mortal Kombat = sucked
Metal Gear (in the works) = 95% chance of sucking.
Final Fantasy (not really based on the game though) = sucked
Tomb Raider = Sucked
Tomb Raider 2 = Sucked
Street Fighter = Sucked

I doubt the metroid movie will end the streak of video game related movies that sucked.

Edit: Added the movies I forgot

me = sucks for forgetting that
My view is this:

If hollywood can make their own story, it will suck.
(everything above, but final fantasy)

However, if nintendo is smart and writes the script themselves, the chance of it sucking will drop about 75%, the writing in the E-manga is very good and interesting, and samus is barely suited up in that.

The Prince of Persia movie being made also interests me, simply because the same guy who wrote the script for PoP:SoT is writing the script for the movie.  And that game had a very entertaining script.

Anyway, at the very least, we can expect it to look pretty and have stuff blow up.

:P
A metroid movie is a bad idea. The only way it would work is if it was a Maru Mari movie. Otherwise...well we know what happens with game-movie or movie-game translations. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

You mentioned Screw Attack joke, but I'm sure they wouldn't forget this either.

But anyway, meh. I'd go see it if it came out, but it'd probably suck. Unless the movie had sequence breaking... HOW FAST CAN YOU WATCH THIS ONE AND A HALF HOUR MOVIE!!#!@!??/?/
That would actually be funny to watch, Samus doing some sequence breaking in the movie... seriously though, if someone makes a joke about the screw attack, I'll... help yoshi force feed the guys poison marshmellows!

Rolling Eyes  Shocked

Shocked OMG I HOPE THEESE GAMES NEVER COME OUT... Shocked

people might buy them and obvously they will suck and people will buy them and theyll thinkREAL meroid games suck because these games suck and they have the metroid title (they obviously wont be metroid games) and the REAL metroid games wont sell because of theese games sucking! Shocked

help.................................................
I personally think "Let them try"

you never know, they might rip the story straight from the E-manga, (perhaps a little closer to when mother brain goes loopy) and not only would it have a decent plot, more characters to work with (The chozo) but it would be telling a VERY important part of the metroid history.

and look good doing it.

I figure that it couldn't hurt the series, if its horrendous it'll just go down in shame and rarely be talked about (the mario brothers movie REALLY impacted sales on those games).  Theres a chance it could be good, so let them go ahead and try.
If it sucks, I shall assist in the poison marshmallow feeding as well.  If it doesn't, I hope they don't show Samus out of suit till the end.  I want to SEE all the people's faces when they realize that Samus is a girl.

They probably WILL know that Samus is a girl during the commercial, you know how they say who the actors are during the commercial and in the movie posters?

I JUST FIGURED OUT WHAT I WANT TO SEE IN THE METROID MOVIE! During the credits or when the movie ends, I wanna see how long it took the actor and the % pickups "Samus" got

For Pete's sakes, people, stop complaining about Woo's damn games. If you read closely, the newspost says he's developing three ORIGINAL TITLES in his Tiger Hill studio. It never says ANYWHERE that these three titles have anything to do with Metroid.

As for the movie, well, unless they can get Laura Prepon as Samus, then I'm not watching it. :P
This seems...interesting. I hope it's false, if not, I hope it collapses. Metroid is a game, not a movie. Besides, what are they gonna have happen in the stupid movie? Have Ridley talk? Actually...that'd be funny...
I predict a 97% chance of sucking, 2% chance of not sucking, and 1% change of being decent. Any better than that has a 0% chance.

Did anyone else notice the wrongness of this paragraph? I mean, I'm not expecting them to be perfect, but...
