Is a 1-item run actually possible?

If you can make it around the Metroids in Tourian, there doesn't seem to be much that stops a 1-item run from being feasible.

If so, why haven't more people attempted it, however ridiculously hard it may be?

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!

I know for certain that there's a TAS of it. As for why people aren't running it, perhaps people are aware of how boring it may be, so choose not to do it, or maybe they just don't see it as a speed run, as such, which this site is aimed at...

IIRC Klefmung/mangad00d/whatshisname once claimed to have done a one item run.

so it's basically possible but i haven't heard of anyone ever doing one.

I have enough trouble skipping bombs. Fighting Kraid both bombless AND iceless just sounds insane. >_<

...Oh, and I should probably mention that I've at least gotten half through the second room in Tourian carrying only bombs and 150 missiles. I suspect luring rinkas through the room MIGHT help getting through, but I'm pretty sure at least one of the metroids still appears even if there are 3 rinkas on screen.
