I noticed this the other day, but didn't want to elaborate until I had played some more.
I (and I'm sure many others) discovered you can finish Kraid's lair without powergrip and ice beam (and can get almost every item, so far) but that's not particularly useful, except maybe in a speed run.
But, if you get ice beam at the top of Brinstar first like you're supposed to, there's something rather significant immediately after it. By using the secret drop column on the far right of Brinstar, you can reach the bug boss, and thus Ridley, without ever getting the speed booster from Kraid.
If you look at Ridley's lair, you see that there's only one 'heat' passageway and absolutely no significant items that are required to actually beat the game. You just get the screw attack, gravity suit and open the passageway to Tourian.
Which should you do first? I THINK you can get every item in Ridley once you have the speed booster, so you should do Kraid first anyway. So, why would they include such an obvious way to kill Ridley first? Just to be old-school?
Edit: I learned on the gamefaqs board the game has different endings for low% runs, so maybe they intend for you to skip the speed booster.
Another interesting tidbit is that green door behind you when you enter the ice beam room. That thing is just glowing with portent but I can't figure out what it means. Ice beam is required to beat metroids?, and you have to go forward to reach the missle before the shortcut to Ridley. There's no other way to reach that missle so it can't be related to 100% running. Why?
In other disturbing news, GBA movies sometimes desynch and don't finish properly, exactly like ZSNES movies. I saw one of my own desynch and do the wrong things, at two seperate times. This is bad because I was going to make a 100% item run movie in the normal order, because I got a little confused about what the normal order was supposed to be. But now I don't feel like it.
