I agree....Dark Aether didn't seem cool.......I liked Prime 1 because even in the Phazon Mines, it was still a healthy balance in color variety. In the Impact crater, it was a little annoying getting around, and I really think that in Prime 1, that they should've let you use the Phazon beam more. And something else about Prime 3.....the nova beam? Back in the Prime 1 days, I imagined a beam like that, except it was more like the plasma beam, and had this awesome swirl of light, sort of like a fully charged plasma beam. Plus, I called it the Supernova
Beam.........Odd.........

IMHO, Prime 2 had the best art direction as a package.  If you look at the design of the game, as a whole, then I think it beats the other two.  Even if the color scheme was black, white, gray, and purple.

Exactly. Echoze's art is boring as hell-- it's all muddy and dark, and nearly the ENTIRE game is like that. Corruption's got lots of dark and bright colors, but still can keep a consistent atmosphere throughout. Echoze's atmosphere is consistent, but it's just boringly depressing.
Torvus was not bright, but it was full of colour.

Sanctuary Fortress was blue, orange and white.

Quote from Arkarian:
I do feel that Corruption had far too many reds in its landscapes/art, but at least it wasn't as bad as Echoze's. Prime I's was the best mix imo. It looked the most like a plausible alien planet, while still not looking too much like Earth.
Yes, a forest and a temple - fine.  But also a very hot area and then conversely a cold one.  Plausible, no.  Fun to play in, yes.

The only let down for me was the Mines. They were far more boring than ANYTHING out of Echoes, including the music.

Great, now we're putting down the games we've come to know and love! (Not really LOVE........and not really putting them down....)
I guess, all the Metroid games have their ups and downs, and
some seem to have many in one place whereas others don't! So....I wonder........what everyone else thinks, cause everyone over at my house is asleep and I am extremely bored......plus I've said almost all
that I could say about Prime 2.......but not 1+3! Well, maybe 3......

Anyhow, I like almost all of the metroid games.....and I just got done making a sprite on a paint program....it stinks, but it doesn't, cause I made it.....anyhow, I've changed my avatar, PLUS I have come to realize the best Prime EVER..........the first!
You can speedrun it, and it's become a well-known breakthrough in the realm of 3-D Metroid. Plus, they did a great job on it, AAAAAAND,
you can play duck hunt on it, though who would get that bored...?
ALSO, you can go into SeCrEt WoRlDs! I haven't done it yet....
Quote from groovemeister:
I think it wasn't the difficulty of any one of the bosses - it was all 3 straight after each other with no restarts.  IMO once you beat one and died, you should have been able to continue from there.

The first time I fought Dark Samus on Hypermode, I went in thinking "okay, I just have to beat her, then if I die on Aurora I'll just start there."  And I ended up with nearly a full bar of Phazon, going into Aurora.  So, I let it kill...then got angry.

Echoes isn't exactly a happy game.  Wink

I think that the reds were fine, mainly because it's just the Pirate Homeworld and Valhalla with the reds.  Bryyo was more yellows and stone colors, while Elysia had lots of teals, yellows, and greens.

Norion...a boring gray...but I think that's how a human would design.  Human military designer color sense: black, brown, green, grey.

I'm not talking about the game or its atmosphere; I'm talking about the color scheme. And entire game should never look as depressing and bland as Echoze.
Bangaa Bishop
I kinda see both sides here; for one, it seems like it should be a depressing place, given that a great civilization has been more or less reduced to one living guy and a bunch of others in stasis. It should be dark and gloomy, but echoes kinda takes it to overkill.
Look, witty text!
I think they made Dark Aether too dark, really...  Especially since the color scheme was such that everything just sort of blended together into a big mass of black and purple, and the visual effects from the atmosphere (before the Light Suit, anyhow) only make things even worse.  All the places also felt kinda cramped, due to the fact you were basically limited to the immediate area around the crystals and beacons to keep from corroding away.

I didn't have much of a problem with Magmoor and Phendrana's proximity to each other, since the former is subterranian.  However, Phendrana being as close to the warmer Tallon Overworld and Chozo Ruins is kind of a stretch, I'd say.  The difference in elevation can't be that extreme.

Someone doesn't quite get the hint!
Prime 3 would have been nearly perfect in its art direction if it weren't for Norion.  I was sick-to-my-stomach depressed when I played through the first planet.  It was so bland and boring and sterile, I was worried.  Then when you land on Bryyo that first time and see those giant statues.  I stayed in that first zone for at least 5 minutes just looking at the artistry that went into that area. And then Skytown is absolutely genius in design, art, music, mood, atmosphere, etc...

Prime 1 was brilliant for many many reasons, but to me it felt so alive and vibrant.  The environments seemed so organic and real.

I played through Prime 2 once.  I finished it and put it away and I haven't played it since.  Yes, its a great game, but Primes 1 & 3 are on a completely different level than Echoes.

Also, and on a completely different subject; Nintendo should re-release MP1&2 with Wii controls!  Wtf else is Retro gong to do? :)

Show their true potential again by breaking free from the same old shit? Corruption was great, but I'd like to see something brand new.
I do wonder... Retro say that they are "taking a break" from Metroid.  But since Nintendo owns them, I wonder what they'll do next?  Another old-school 1st party Nintendo re-make?  Maybe Nintendo will just allow them to make their own, new IP; though I doubt that.

I doubt Nintendo would mind if they did, assuming they didn't have anything else they wanted them to do high-priority.
@ granto: Norion and Olympus were fine I thought.  If the whole game was grey then I'd have an issue but one section which was also futuristic-ey was pretty cool IMO.  Pretty p1ssed off that I couldn't revisit the Olympus in fact.

RE Retro: they were initially working on 4 other projects then dropped them all for Prime.  Maybe they'll pick one of them up?

Eh, I hope so.....and I saw on youtube that it looks like they're still working on Dread.....maybe they LIED about not doing it.....or, like me, they might've just had second thoughts. Anyhow, I think that if they do make dread, it's going to be great. They did a good job with Zero mission and Super, not to mention Fusion, but I think that instead of Ridley and Kraid coming back, they should have Nightmare come back....he was awesome beyond compare to the other bosses.
He posed a good challenge, and I think that out of all living robots, he and Quadraxis are the best. And again, it would be nice to see someone other than Ridley come back. Dread would really be great if
you could have battles with others.....but then again, it would be sort of annoying. Though, if there were a mode where you and a friend could work together, on say, the last boss, that would be awesome.

Ah, that gold mine of factual information, Youtube.
Don't read this! Please don't! I said NO!
.....Do you mean that in a good way?
Youtube can be good, And REALLY good, since I have recorded several songs, thanks to a sometimes quiet house and my trusty small tape recorder, but then again, youtube is also full of liars, and crazy people.
Not to mention some of the horrid videos that are posted, which few of them tell of the content.........
BUT, in spite of all that, youtube isn't just a blackhole-like vortex of impurity, or a lovely outburst of happiness, joy, and G-rated cartoons.
It's a tilted medium, tilting 1 degree to the IMPURE side.
Anyhow, yeah, youtube is good, and I really do believe that Dread is going to be a good project, provided they didn't drop it completely.
COMPLETELY!

(Bit of a strong emphasis moment)

It's funny to read an entire thread and see it slowly drift off subject. Anyways, for bosses, I really liked the big floating rock boss in prime1 and I kind of miss him since I don't actually own that game. I really liked that game because it had much of a super metroid feeling to it and I really love that game. As for prime3, I've beaten it 6 times so far, including a 22% run on normal. The bosses are fine, DS is soooooo freaking hard on hyper mode that I, too, said to myself I would never do it again although I probably will.

As for not really boss related stuff, I don't like that in prime3 you can't change your weapon AT ALL once it gets upgraded. Even a super metroid style weapon change would have been nice. The prime1 system was sometimes annoying but generally good and super missiles are cool:D.

All in all, no boss totally awed me in prime3, prime1 was a bit better, but I don't think any boss came close to impressing me as much as the second boss of twilight princess, even though the fight is short-lived.

The second boss of TP was not that great IMO...
Too much LoTR.
The best part about him is the intro scene and the music.

Oh I forgot to mention something else off topic since some of you were talking about the levels and stuff. I totally loved where you first land on Bryyo with the chained planets. It looks just amazing, although it doesn't make any sense in a physical way:P.

I really miss phedrana's ambiance. I was just dazzled by the snowflakes, the scenery and the calm music the first time I got there.

Those "chained planets" where either the Bryyonian spacecraft or the scientists atmosphere regulator.

The earlier post about TP.....we used to have that, and by looking at videos, I was on the coolest level-the 6th. But that's when it was given back to the original owner....and the 6th boss itself surprised me, for the fact that the music and the setup.....just corresponded
with one another, sort of like MP1's MP fight. Also, that  big rock thing was named Thardus. And, I agree, really cool. Still, How could Anyone like Fyrus, or whatever his name was, from TP? I think it was annoying, but that's my opinion.

-Got Nintendo?
Dood Trigger™
The coolest thing about TP's second boss was the coolest thing about any TP boss: the boss clear music. Seriously, I can hate the battle as I hate the third one, for instance, but when the "dun duuuuun..." plays I just can't help but smile.

As for the ultimate Prime boss line-up, I really have no idea which one's my favorite.

I believe Prime 2's is technically the best because it offers more variety. Morph Ball is used often during boss battles and there are usually many distinct phases, which makes the whole thing feel fresh as you advance. Quadraxis is the obvious example, but I don't think any boss in the series encourages the player to use so many different strategies in one battle like Chykka. You can go from Light Beam with radar-hunting to Super Missiles while she's jumping, then from Dark Beam with tons of patience to Grapple Beam to Seeker Missiles, then the absolutely orgasmic Light Beam spamming in the end. And the Caretaker Drone battle perfectly illustrates how creative Echoes' fights can be. That's one of my favorite battles in any Metroid.

The problem with Corruption is that most of the time they're just so similar in structure. You'll always have to use Grapple to pull out some sort of shield then enter Hypermode to actually deal damage. Then there are shockwaves. Ugh. That's probably why Gandrayda's weird shaky-shaky attack is so refreshing when it happens... at least it's different. But they can be pretty interesting, even so, if only because you can actually aim in Prime 3. I also like how you can freeze Mogenar's face and Ghor's arena for some extra stunning time. Rundas and Gandrayda are stylish, Meta Ridley was breathtaking and Omega is nice.

As for Prime 1, I fought them so many times that some of them really annoy me from time to time... like the Incinerator Drone and Flaaghra, which are really fast but feel endless. It's likely because they're so early into the game and I just wanna see Phendrana already, dammit. Maybe that's why I love Magmoor. Nothing happens there, you just use it to access other areas. It's the actual overworld in the game. Thardus, Omega Pirate and Metroid Prime are the usual awesomeness. Corruption could have used some overwhelming gigantic bosses like those.
