I think people like the Zelda games because they have good hand to hand combat, a good variety of weapons, and a good storyline. Plus, they are just plain fun.

Metroid has all of those too, but it has more of a science-fiction and platform-y feel, which a lot of gamers don't like as much. I like it a lot though, obviously.

Though I'd have to say that Zelda is my favourite series, and then Metorid.

Gee, how could I have guessed?  Wink

I do see your point on that one, but for me anyway Sci-Fi has always been my favorite setting / genre of almost anything (Books, movies, games, etc.) Not that I don't like Fantasy in any way (Lord of the Rings, anyone?) but I just prefer Science Fiction.

Like I said, it's a matter of what you like as a person that makes the difference.

Edit: Yeah, if we didn't have some feelings for the Metroid series, what exactly are we all doing here?  Laughing
Quote from Prime Hunter:
Yeah, it makes me think of how Metroid is only awesome to a select crowd (Aka, us  Wink ) and not as popular as most other series. It seems more and more people these days are into shooters and multiplayer, and not exploration and using your brain. There is still enough people who like those types since they still sell pretty good though.

Metroid isn't loved by as much of a "select" crowd as you think

Prime sold a decent emount eventually, something like 1.8 mill.  The GBA games sold enough to create another sequel so quickly.  Metroid isn't one of nintendo's biggest properties, but it is definately one of its most loved.

Metroid isn't a household name that much anymore, simply cause of the lack of any sequels for 8 years.  (then the series number more than doubled in less than 3 years) but it is getting attention, even by the non-gamers these days.
Ok, so when I said "Select Crowd" I was referring to things like Zelda, Mario, Halo, etc. (You know, the REALLY big names) Metroid is more like you said: Somewhere near the middle of the road, but loved by those who play it.
It's not like it makes too much of a difference to me anyway: As long as they sell enough to make more sequels, I will be happy (As will the rest of us I think)  Wink

Geez, I am only 18 and I feel this way about gamers these days. (And it makes me feel somewhat old too, even though I am still very young compared to others) Imagine what gaming will be like another 20 years down the road...

Hmm... makes me think of another Nintendo Star: Donkey Kong had the same kind of thing happen (Between the originals and DKC there was what, a couple of years at least?)

Everything you said applies exactly to me... Earlier on, you said you grew up with the Nintendo - I was the same way, except with Oddessy 2. I got the NES soon after. I think it's funy that just about everyone I talk to say's their first Final Fantasy they played was FF7. I can say that my first Final Fantasy was... Final Fantasy. It is a real shame, though, that we, still teenagers, describe our games like my grandfather describes the Great Depression. It's just that people usually don't seem as interested in old video games...

20 years from now, I predict that video games will suck... The sad thing is that I'll be working in the industry, so it means it might be partly my fault.

I never said there was anything wrong with it. I for one don't really care for multiplayer games that much anymore: No one else to play them with (Except my older brother and dad really) Crying or Very sad That kinda effects my jugment on this sort of thing.

But it also seems that most games (Even Metroid now) have some version of a multplayer in them, even if they are pretty bad. At least from my perspective, if a game doesn't have multiplayer most of the gaming public doesn't seem to care for it as much. There are the few exceptions to that rule though, like Zelda and Metroid (Off the top of my head anyway) There are others that are strictly single player, but it seems that number is steadily fading.

Once again though, this is just from what I hear, so it's more of an opinion than actual fact.

I sure hope that's not how things end up: I mean, gaming is starting to become bigger than the movies. It's also a career I may end up in as well, so that makes me want to still have them by then too.  Wink
Quote from Arrow:
They probably exaggerated about the time it took them to complete the game, since this was being printed in EGM. If they said "We were able to beat it in 4 hours", then a lot of people reading the interview might read that and think "Woah, that game is short. Forget it, I'm not buying that." In this case, the longer they make it sound, the better.

Another theory:
if they say "we could beat it in 7 hours," and a casual gamer picks the game up, and gets it down to 5 or 6 hours, they're gonna feel pretty proud of themself. "I must rock!" They will think to themselves. And, those thoughts of awesomeness will be subconsciously linked to EGM, which will make them like EGM more.

Probably false, but it's a theory.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
I was playing MP2 yesterday, and was using that bomb slot to get to the Agon translator, and my mom and her boyfriend walked in while I was in morph ball mode, and he said "hey, did you make a strike?"  Rolling Eyes

What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
So was it a strike or a spare?
Wow... it must take every ounce of restraint for Retro not to add a Morph Ball Bowling mini-game, like Tekken Tag supposedly had.

Little humiliating touches like that aren't really a good idea for gamers.

Like getting the morph-ball into a bomb-slot, and the camera zooming back to show that you've just 'completed' a wall-sculpture of Mario by becoming the nose.
"Brave Fencer Musashi" had a bowling game... but you had to do it to finish one of the dungeons! I think the biggest deterrent to Nintendo putting in something like a bowling mini-game (Which wouldn't have been all too surprising, actually...) is the fact that Metroid has a certain level of 'class' to it. Even Zelda, which was Nintendo's other 'sophisticated' game, has been tainted to be a kiddy game (Four Swords  Crying or Very sad ). Yes, video games are already bigger than the movie industry, which means there's only a select few of us that actually care about the games we play. Since the overwhelming majority  don't care, games need to be marketed to them in order to make a profit.[/i]

I'm trying to figure out how people can call four swords "kiddy" considering it is just LTTP with a few new effects, and diabloish style multiplayer.  LTTP certainly wasn't considered "kiddy" when it was released on the SNES.

My best guess is that today Kiddy is defined as:

A) not using as realistic graphics as possible

or, if not using realistic graphics then

B) it must contain:

- Blood
- Violent content
- Language
- Or be "trippy" so it has a drunk or on drugs connotation.

Anything that doesn't fit into A or B is considered a "kiddy" game.  Dumb, but very true heh.

Four Swords is kiddy? That's news to me... I thought it was a blast. Anyone who thinks the Zelda series has become to kiddy obviously didn't beat Wind Waker. Regardless, I don't even care if games are considered kiddy or not. All I care about is fun gameplay. I play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games because they're fun. I enjoy playing them, so someone else's opinion really isn't going to effect me.

I actually had written a similar theory in my post, but then decided to delete it for some reason. But yeah, I completely agree with you... that's probably a major part of it as well.

Seriously man, have you ever played Four Swords?

Four Swords is honestly just about the most fun I've ever had multiplayer, there is nothing else that has that amount of competetive co-op (note: I've only ever played it with 4 people)

There is more yelling going on during a game of four swords than I've heard at anything else in my life.  "THAT WAS MY FUCKING RUPEE BITCH"
"GET YOUR ASS OVER TO THIS DOOR ASSHOLE"
"hey, get over and help me move this boulder...."
"GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE AND HELP WITH THIS BOULDER BEFORE  I BOMB YOUR FUCKING ASS"

I love that game to death.  I can't wait for the DS one... Tis my second most wanted DS game.  (After castlevania)
Hmm... I guess I hit a vein about Four Swords. When I say kiddy, I meant how they turned into a level-based party game. To me, this drastically simplified the series, making it waaay too linear. At first, I saw the game and was pleasently surprised by the graphics. Everything looked like LTTP, but the game played nothing like, well, Zelda. To me, party games always feel like they're made for kids, which is why I usually avoid them. I played FS, 'cuz I thought it wasn't a party game, and it's probably why I didn't like it. Kinda like biting into a chocolate chip cookie, then finding out it was really raisin.

I enjoyed Wind Waker because it played like Zelda, I just wish that you didn't have to do the fetch quest at the end...

Personally, I'd like to see more games that have 'kiddy' graphics. I did not, however, like Four Swords (hence the crying face). Just like Yoshi said, it was far too linear, and, to me, didn't feel much like  a Zelda game. Sorry to those who did like it. Minish Cap, however, looks frickin' awsome! While we're on the topic, the most fun I've ever had multiplayer was Bomberman 64.

Minish Cap is "frickin' awesome", but Bomberman 64 has nothing on the older versions.
This discussion has nothing to do with Echoes.

And I didn't even do it this time.
