I'm still confused on how to get the screw attack without the varia / speed boost. I don't want to go all the way back to Brinstar for the silly varia. Can I still get the screw attack? I'm saving at the pod at the bottom of the green vertical shaft on the east side of Norfair (already did Ridley's Lair). I don't understand how to get to the west side of Norfair to find the missiles in the ceiling...

Directions?

~ AKA marshmallow
I can't remember the specifics right now, but I'm pretty sure you have to pass through a heat room to get there, and you have to ibj to get through it without the speed booster.
With enough Energy Tanks (I'm pretty sure four is the minimum) you can do it even without the Varia.

I think you can actually do it with only 1 or 2, you just need to be good at bomb jumping.

And VERY fast at rolling through a small passage, bombing two blocks, jumping over a lava pit and climbing up the ledge, running into the next room, over a very large amount of irregularly-shaped blocks, and running to the door after bomb-jumping.  Not to mention dodging enemies.  Coming back it's easier since you don't have to bomb-jump and you can screw attack the blocks and enemies.  Then you only need about 1 or 2.
How many marshmallows do you know? I could begin writing again under this pseudo name and no one would notice but if I used my old name there'd be talking. Funny, isn't it?

But yes, it's the one from GameFAQs. I use this name now for most games...been playing CS for quite awhile. Made some movies...fun stuff. I always liked keeping up on Super Metroid runs and when this game came out I thought it wouldn't be very good but then I played it and mesa liked! Been more fun than Super, so far.

Anyway, I was afraid I'd have to go in there and bomb jump up there. Is it just that I'm not used to this game or is bomb jumping a lot harder than in Super? If not harder than there's definitely a different rhythm because the only way I can go up in this game is to spam bombs and pray...which actually works. But it's not pretty!

Bomb jumping is said to be easier in ZM, but whether that's because spamming them works or because there's an easier rythm I'm not sure. I've never really got the rythm down in either this or Super before.

the collision radius of the bomb explosions is much larger in zm than in any previous game, meaning you have to be much less precise on the timing. thus, the rhythm is "easier."

I'm pretty sure it's larger in II.  There a bomb will explode 1-2 blocks above you, while you're falling down, and it'll still boost you up!

Yeah, it's larger in II. I've had that happen to me trying to see how well you can bomb jump in II. I made over half way up the screen.

Also, the timing used in ZM is a little faster than the one used in Super.
Well, diagonal bombing is A LOT easier than in Super...I made it through and got the screw attack and the rest of the game was simple. 15% was fun though.

Maybe I should actually get 100%...lol.

Heh... I believe it's an honor for all of us having the legendary Marshmallow posting here. :P I'd love seeing a strategy guide of yours for a 100% speed run, like the one you did for Super. That's the only way I could achieve a run time of under 2 hours. :P That's how much I suck at Super. :D

Welcome aboard, Mr. Legend. ;) In the name of all the members of the M2k2 forums, make yourself at home. :)

Now would be a bad time to ask "who the hell is marshmallow?" right?

Seriously, though, if you can get a welcome like that you must be good. I may have arrived on the Metroid scene to late to witness your greatness personally, but your reputation speaks for itself. I humbly bow to your skills.
yeah, oops, welcome to m2k2, marshmallow.

Apparently legendary FAQ writer for GameFAQs.

I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it. I was just wondering if he was the same guy.  :?

Welcome aboard, in any case.
Ahh, ive read a few of his FAQ's, never once considered him "legendary" then again, i stay away from gamefaq message boards, I value my IQ.

anyway, welcome aboard.  I've wrote a faq, it takes quite a bit of work.... you've wrote quite a few, each probably far better than mine.
