Alright, this is my first post, so don't call me a newb or anything because of that. I love the Metroid series. Not as much as Megaman, for Megaman is king, but I love Metroid second best.

Now, I have discovered a way to get the Screw Attack right after the Varia Suit in Zero Mission. I have sent Nate an URL in which he can get the movie. I would show you all the movie, but its a free account on Angelfire, and I don't want my meager bandwith sucked up dry. So, you have to wait until he posts the movie (If he does, that is).

...Or, you can AIM me and I will send you the movie. Its in DivX 5.0.5 codec and 6100 KB in size.

Why did I bother to post this? Simple: I wanted to help others sequence break the game even more. I haven't beaten the game yet, hell, I'm right after getting the Varia Suit, but I know for certain areas cannot be entered without the Screw Attack. It was like that in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.

My AIM SN is Metakid52.

Screw Attack early is my best friend, because it lets me pick up Screw Attack in a 15% game without using up a % on the Speed Boost, and I think without a doubt Screw Attack is the most valuable optional item in the game.
Nice work! It's a good feeling, discovering a sequence break for yourself, isn't it?

I agree with Tooz, screw attack is the best choice of all the "optional" items. In fact, I'd say the lower the percent you aim at, the more important screw attack becomes. However, I'm not so sure that only certain areas can be accessed with screw attack. Most areas that look that way have another way in. There may be some optional areas that can only be entered with screw attack that I'm forgetting about, but I know for a fact that you can finish the game without it.
Light of Day: You won't beleive how ectastic I am :). I also discovered a way to get a Missile Tank in Kraid early, but thats another story.

Tooz: You need the Speed Booster to get it. ShineSpark plays a large role in obtaining it.

Oh, you must have found a different method then. I just missile the missile blocks on the ceiling and ibj up.
at one point, I was planning to get the screw attack right after morph ball bombs before I came here, but then I saw how far out of the way I'd have to go and how long it would be, so I decided not to >_>

Where and how? I'm without Speed Booster atm and I would love Screw Attack... :P

Sorry, but what missile blocks are you talking about? And though I'm not entirely sure, IBJ means Ice-Beam Jump right?

IBJ = infinate bomb jump.

There's a row of four missile blocks, stacked vertically, in the room below the entrance to the passage toward the screw attack. They're close to the left wall... I couldn't tell you exactly how many spaces away. Blast them away and then you can bomb jump up into the secret passage and towards the Screw Attack.

I didn't find those blocks when I tried looking for any. But, I'll have a look again.

In the room that is normally the one "needed" to go through with the speed booster (1 room to the left of the save point on the left side of Norfair), there are 4 missile blocks on the far left.

Simply shoot 4 missiles straight up while on the far left and you can go up to the room with the Screw Attack.

No Speed Booster nor Varia needed.

If you have Hi-Jump, just walljump up instead of bomb jumping.
Ahhh crud. My way is worthless.

I didn't even know there was another way to get there. I tried searching with the search feature but didn't find any topics.

Yeah, the bulk of the stuff that's been found has been discussed in #metroid and not posted here. It'll be a good while before it all gets archived.

I'd still like to see your method, though.
I DID IT! Very_Early_Screw! Mind you, I DID need Varia. You have to go through some flamed corridors that hurt you without Varia.

I guess mines still good for speed or 100% runs... I guess :\

How did you skip the long beam?

You know that door with the blocks in front of it that seems like you need the long beam to get by? Get on the ledge above it and shoot down. There's hidden destructable blocks there, allowing you to get down into that door.
Skipping Long Beam:

Ah, so thats what those breakable blocks are for. I found those, but had no idea what they were for.
I mentioned this in another thread, but getting Screw Attack early in turn allows you to pick up hella Missile Tanks, the Hi Jump, and the Wave Beam out of sequence, so I suppose those could be added to the list of "early items".

Here's my brief written description, with some help from Toozin, on how to get the Screw Attack right after Varia Suit.

First, acquire the Varia Suit minus the Power Grip by turbo bombing through the room prior to the suit (Dave's method). Then (if doing 100%) you can pick up a Missile Tank in the room to the right of the Save Room and take a shortcut to Norfair. Or head back the long way and try and pick up some more upgrades, I haven't written this out in detail yet. Anyway, once you reach Norfair, head to Crateria to grab the Power Grip like you normally would, and return to Norfair. Head to the right towards the green tunnel, go to the top level to grab another Missile Tank (since you now have the Varia), then drop down and grab the Ice Beam. Loop your way around through the Rippers until you get back to the green tunnel. Freeze the Ripper above the breakaway blocks, and use it as a platform to reach the entrance to the side tunnel. When you first fall, set Bombs to break one block out of the way, and Wall Jump your way into the small hole. Continue bombing to fall down into another short shaft, and shoot the block out from the ceiling, then wall jump your way up this one. The next drop is a long steady one all the way to the bottom of the green tunnel.
From here, start working your way back up by using your beam or Missiles to break any blocks in your path. Eventually you'll reach the Chozo statue that tells you where to find the Varia Suit. Exit out the hatch to locate the Morph Ball Launcher, but don't use it. Use two Missiles on the blocks to the right of the Launcher, and wall jump your way up (bomb your way up if doing low percent to avoid the Missile Tank), then enter the door on the other side of the high ledge to reach the HI JUMP. Now that you have the Varia, blaze a path underneath the Chozo, and get past the giant Sidehopper. In the next room you would normally use the Speed Booster to clear some blocks, but you can drop to the platform by the lava and turbo bomb your way up.
Continue to the right to reach another green room. Cross the room and stand just to the right of the hatch, and fire four Missiles up at the ceiling. If you have Hi Jump, you can wall jump your way up the new tunnel; otherwise use the turbo bomb method to reach the room that leads to the SCREW ATTACK.

Quite a discovery, if you ask me. Now if only you could turn off the damn Screw Attack at times...

Tim, just shoot your gun or look up/down to get out of the screw attack.

o.o

I... uh.... never tried that...

It makes some jumps in Ridley's area (and others) muuuch easier since you don't plow through blocks/enemies you don't want to destroy.
