Would it be possible to make a simple hack of SM that changes nothing, but replaces the controls with controls more like ZM's and fusion's, ie, autorun, one aim button which is directed with the Dpad, a button to hold to switch to missiles, etc? Has such a hack been made?

afaik such a hack has never been made. As for the doability I'm not so sure.

I assume that you'd have to redo how Crystal Flash was done, but for my money a good setup would go like this:

Dpad to move, autorun
L to aim
R+Y to fire missiles (while morphed to lay power bombs)
B to jump
Select to switch between regular missiles and super missiles
A to fire grapple beam (wouldn't equip it, would just fire it normally)
Hold X to use X-Ray

You could probably rearrange it somewhat so that you could add a hold-to-walk button, but you'd probably end up with more toggles that way.

Autorun would be easy to do. One aim button is feasible, but would take some time and work finetuning the transitions - this is possible with SMILE even, though it's still awkward to use.
Holding a button for special weapons...? I'm not even sure how that would be implemented since you still have 5 options (missiles, supers, powerbombs for beam shields, grapple, x-ray). And with the current way it's set up, you'd have to reprogram a fair bit (50-100 lines of assembly at least, I'd guess) to make it work.
On second thought, you could probably make x-ray its own button with the run button effectively unused. But I still don't know what better system you'd be able to come up with.

On second thought, Item Cancel is also effectively useless with such a system. So let's make Weapon Select still work more or less normally, but unless you're holding ex-Item-Cancel, Fire still uses normal beams anyways.
That would actually be relatively easy to program too. Getting the arm-cannon graphics right would probably be the hardest part, but the whole thing together would probably only be ~50 lines still.

I'd fully support this hack if it were made. One of the main reasons I dislike Super is its retarded controls.

Then again, if I go watch a Red Scarlet run, it seems like I'm the retarded one when it comes to controls.
