I agree with Syl, anything less than a revamp would be a step back. Power grip is now required in 2d metroids. It's just too darn awkward to not have it. To make up for this, they could take out some platforms or space out some rooms or something.
I also agree, however, that the map layout should largely be kept. I would like to see some clever shinespark puzzles added, however.
Please, NO, NOT MORE FREAKIN SHINESPARK PUZZLES! Fusion and ZM both had a LOT of them, making them dominate another game would just be too much. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they're in supreme danger of being overused.
The only one I know of offhand is the one to get the E. Tank in the mothership. Besides, I don't think there should be too many puzzles, just one or two.
But, for the love of god, Nintendo better remove the fact that using a Shinespark drains your energy. >_<
and remove the fucking reserve tanks. pointless annoying things, they even had the space for the extra 4 tanks at the top of the screen, why the hell did tehy just shove the word "auto" in there instead?
(I swear, that should have been a cutscene in prime)
hmm sounds like something Maru Mari would have *hint hint*
I think given the way things are going SM would have to be remade. Keeping 3/4 of the original at least. Main areas, main bosses, general layout + items.
But more needs to be put in. Chozodia for example. It's been added to the Zebes world so it should be in future Zebes based games.
Maybe some connections to ZM, trigger a flashback to a ZM scene or to a childhood scene.
Power Grip... mmeeehhmmmm I could live without it, yeah it was useful but it kinda drained the fun out of things like IWJ and IBJ.
I'd like to see some shinespark puzzles like ZM, not overly complex secret msg MF ones (I HATE FISH!!!) but things like Crateria early Super Missile. Brinstar early Super Missile.
Sequence Breaking. SM MUST have Sequence Breaking! Ridley before Kraid, no Vaira, the whole works!
Well if you want Maru Mari to start doing jokes that have been beaten to the ground to the point that they are no longer remotely ammusing, I suppose we could try to stop being funny.
I think they should have it as an unlockable in Prime 2. Since there's enough buttons on the GC controller, it could work. Maybe after beating Hard mode or getting all possible endings or something.
After playing and beating ZM many times I gotta say "TOTAL REVAMP!!!!!"
I would love to see Super Metroid on the GBA with enhanced graphics and new areas! How cool would it be to have Chozo Ruins in it again. Maybe elements from ZM in it, recognisable bits of the Pirate Ship in Maridia (is the ship IS Maridia).
Control scheme is a no brainer.. couldn't play it on GBA without it.
As for shinespark puzzles... i've always hated them. i've beaten ZM, fusion, SM 3-6 times each, but i've never had the patience to master bomb jumping or shinesparking to an art.
I don't know what else they could do in terms of add ons.. SM has almost everything to date in the series... only the PG was left out, and it has 3 things no other 2d game has (x-ray, seperate spring ball, reseve tanks)
Perhaps a blade or incorperate upgrades that make things easier. like level 2 speed boots or longer shinespark charge. not necessary to get through the game, but makes it easier.
Also... if you beat it on hard, just for the sheer fun of it, you can start the game with optional hyper beam.

The thing about the shinespark puzzles is that they are all optional. No metroid game has ever forced you to shinespark or IBJ.
And frankly, some of the things SM threw into the series were crap. The reserve tanks, power bomb beam combos, and x-ray scope were all pretty dumb. (bombing and shooting everywhere is much better) I think the newer 2d metroids have really refined and perfected the item list (as well as control scheme and graphics), though they lack SM's near-perfection in level design.
i've always been able to excuse super metroid for the above listed things, mainly because the game is simply the best game in the world, so it can do whatever the hell it pleases.
I personally loved the X-ray scope and power bomb combo's, I just wish they made a way for the power bomb combo's to be more useful.
The thing about X-ray is that it doesn't use ammo, and more importantly, it allows you to see through things that are just plain "hidden" not "Destructable block" but just those little secret passageways. I personally thought that X-raying every single little room in super metroid looking for secrets was really damn cool.
Five bomb drop was cool, and so was the crystal flash. But there's no need for either the reserve tanks or beam combos. Just give us four regular e-tanks instead, and you shouldn't even be able to select p.bombs while not morphed anyway. The ridiculous weapon selection is the first thing that must be changed.
As I've said before, power gripping would be a modernizing touch, but I appreciate that serious changes would need to be done to the levels, like spacing out platforms and so forth, and I want the layout to pretty much stay the same. So, either way is fine.
I also dislike the x-ray scope, but what the hell. If it makes you guys happy, keep it in.
Graphics, I could go either way on. Sprites are cool, but the look needs an overhaul to get up to the bar ZM set. Those enemies simply aren't animated enough now. Draygon had like 3 moving parts, for crying out loud. And ridley is hardly recognizable as a dragon now, compared with his ZM look. Remake the sprites, at least. 3d graphics would be fine, as long as they look good. A cool option would be to be able to pause the game and look around, like in SSBM.
