Quote from Zeke:
Think about those two words: "shine" and "spark."  Notice the common factor?  That's right: the letter S.  That S is no coincidence. It's there to tell us Samus's speed.  And what number looks the most like an S?  That's right: 5.  So Samus is clearly moving at 55 km/s.  (Why the metric system?  Because after fighting a Queen, a Prime, and an Emperor, Samus has had quite enough of Imperialism.)

Because of the power of the S's, your shinespark is even faster in an SS run.  And ever wonder why the shinespark is so generous to Sess?  He's got three of them, baby.

XD

I really did laugh out loud at that.

And as for how fast she's going?  Well, obviously pretty fast if the only thing that can stop her is a wall or that mysterious large cloud preventing her from going higher in Crateria...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
That cloud is, in reality, solid stone.
I'll be back. Maybe...
The Skree is still more aerodynamic therefore faster.
Quote from Arkarian:
Yes.

I'd say the super jumpy thing is faster than when she's running, and probably... I don't know, 50mph?
I'll be back. Maybe...
We shall make some... investigations.
Let's see...
Let t=time, S=displacement.
Let size of screen block = 1m^2 (let h(SA)=1.8m + dH(PS) then find size of morph ball)
Now, to find (delta s)/(delta t)...

No knowledge of calculus necessary, of course: It's a simple SDT calculation; the only problem is making the readings:

I think the big room in Crateria would probably be best for this... or the Shinespark Training Shaft (with the dachora) in Brinstar.
In ZM the shaft on the east side of Norfair would be best, and in MF the best place is probably... ... ...I don't actually know: all the rooms are really small in MF so you can't get coherent results.

But I think it's at a different speed in different games.

Definitely.

The Shinespark in Super Metroid is WAY faster than the Fusion and Zero Mission ones.

But it steals your health  :(

Doesn't matter, it's still the officially coolest shinespark.

And is there any reason why it was white... then blue... then red?

What's it going to be next? Green?

Don't think there's a reason, as far as I know.

But yes, SM's Shinespark is definitely the best.

It was white in Fusion as well, if you thought it looked blue it definitely was because of her suit.

As for the red color in Zero Mission, it's because the Speed Booster she finds that time is just a shareware version. When she returns in Super Metroid, it's been released as Freeware, with full power and the true colour.
Question: Why is the speed boost called shinespark?
Viking
Precursor
Well, it's not.

You see, Speed Boost is when you run, and the extra boost kicks in after a little while.

However, if you crouch after the extra boost have kicked in, you store the boost energy. By pressing the jump button and pressing a direction, Samus'll fly in said direction, incredibly fast. That's the Shinespark.

Pfft.  It was pink in Fusion.  And yellow in Super, for that matter.

You could've said ultra jump, I just had no idea what the term 'shinespark' meant.

Ready and willing.
Ultra Jump/Super Jump is sort of a depricated term used only by the Super veteran crowd by now, given that MF actually names the technique "shinespark". And am I the only one who think "Super Jump" is sort of a dorky name?

Seeing as it's not really a jump, I agree.

I actually didn't know it had been called Super Jump at some point.

Nope, I do too. Shinespark sounds way, way cooler. Although, I do remember calling it a "Super Jump," or something to that effect, at one point or another.

I used to call it the Spineshark. That was when I was taking nitroglycerin.

Never officially, IIRC. The Super community just had to make up a name, because I don't think there was an official one. And "that move that ostrich teaches you" doesn't exactly roll of the tongue. Yes, smart alecs, I know their names...

That's why they called it the Sonic Slicer.

What's cool is that the official term, when made official in Fusion, was clearly coined by the fans.  A nice tip of the hat from Nintendo to the people who are crazy-good enough to do the Secret Message.

We all probably have before, heck, I didn't even know what a shinespark was at first  :?

I like the Speed Burner more.
lol no way
Isn't Speed Burner from some Megaman game? Like 7 or X2 or something? Bah.

I actually can't remember ever calling it anything other than shinespark... I prolly did, prolly speed jump. That sounds right.
