Yeah, it was officially confirmed to be called a shinespark when Adam called it that after you complete the Secret Message.  But it was coined by the fans and Nintendo picked it up and included it to cater to the Metroid elite.

Word.  I'll get in-depth as to how and why the Shinespark works like tomorrow.  Now Family Guy.
Doesn't the shinespark/charge work by gathering energy when Samus runs and increases in speed, and when it is full it gives her the ability to let it all out at one time causing her to fly in a straight line at a very high speed?

I found the old Metroid Science thread on the second page.  Nothing on the Shinespark, but the above is just a game description of sorts.  I think he wants to know how it actually might "work", hypothetically.  I've got some ideas myself, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow, and when I post them I'll do so in the Science thread.

I also plan to compile all of the theories in the Science thread into a Metroid Compendium of Speculatory Knowledge...  Laughing
My guess on how it works.

As Samus runs she builds up an energy charge, much like the Boost Ball, but since she's in corporeal form and not energy (as she is in Morph Ball) it needs her running to build up the charge.

Once she is charged up, by ducking (a game function and no more) she then floods her jet pack (that thing on her back) with all this built up energy resulting in a massive burst of force propelling her in whatever direction she wanted.

The force of this is so great and she moves so quickly, is why blocks and enemies get destroyed in the collision.
