After countless hours (probably countless hour of actual game time), I successfully performed the horizontal bomb jump in Kraid's lair. While I was practicing this, I noticed that some of the late-timed bombs decrease your height and just wondered why it's possible to recover from this if the bomb would (should) prevent you from detonating a higher one quickly enough. I might just be getting confused, though, by having to place a second bomb just before the first one goes off.

The successful attempt occurs just after 4:10 in the video.

Thread title:
good job. several other runners do this trick already though.

i'm not sure why decreasing in height a bit is a "problem", since you want to stay as low as possible.

Oh it's not a problem, part of me yays every time it happens; I just find it confusing.

(replaced "how" with "why" in original post to avoid confusion)
Bombs have a decently sized hitbox, and Samus only needs to be inside of the hitbox to be propelled. It's not like we need to plant a bomb at the exact same place every time. It's a little more dynamic than that. Hopefully that makes it less confusing for you.
I figured out why it happens and I'm not confused any more. It's just because Samus places bombs slightly lower than her center.
Try practising from further then the edge of the platform one tile at a time and see how far back you can go and still make it all the way to the other side.  I've made it from the far edge of the first platform, but can't seem to make it from the second platform yet.  It's a fun and tricky exercise.
