So I recently went out and bought a Gamecube again (got a pearl white Dol-101 model in mint condition) and grabbed a copy of metroid prime (original US version) but i'm having a couple of issues.

Firstly, the game seem to be freezing in the exact same place every time.  In the North Atrium, but only when backtracking through it.  When I first go through it heading towards Hive Totem, it's fine, but when I come back through.... Crash! It freezes with the buzzing sound, and it happens every single time I try to play.

The second issue i'm having, is the door to the Hive Totem room will not open at all.  The previous room (with the 3 firefly type things) seems to trigger the loading fine, but when I shoot the door, nothing happens...

Now I also have a Wii, and I tried playing it on that, and everything is fine.  The North Atrium doesn't crash the game, and the Hive Totem door opens pretty much instantly.
I know the simple solution is to just play it on my Wii, but I'm a bit of a purist and I love the Gamecube (hence buying on despite the fact I have a Wii)
I also want to get into speedrunning, and if i'm forced to play it on my Wii, I hope that won't invalidate any personal records I may get. (im sure it wont...)

So what gives?  Does Metroid Prime have issues running on the newer model Gamecubes or something?
There's nothing wrong with my Gamecube as every other game I have works perfectly on it.

Help? :(

It's commonly known that the 0-00 and0-01 versions can crash in Chozo ruins when playing on a GC, but to me crashes only happened either at the first elevator or in furnance.
For the 2nd issue, I don't really have an idea what can cause this. does the door turn from blue to gray when you shoot it ?
If it does, there might be wrong with the loading ( actually I got one crash at the door leading to watery hall, by the door as it just didn't open and crashed for whatever reason, but I think that this was only caused by the gc being not able to read the disc once ).
If it still stays blue, then the game probably thinks you are in a different room and you somehow skipped the transition trigger. you can confirm this by looking at which room the map shows you.

I had a door won't open crash not too long ago, but it was on the frigate. On my Wii.

The first chozo elevator and furnace access crash because the previous room didn't unload in time.
The freeze is when the load trigger for the upcoming room is triggered.

I'm curious about the door thing. It seems the load trigger for said room is being bypassed. If the door stays blue, head back to door you came through. This way you get the 3rd load phase to happen. For reference, watch your minipap. When it transitions you've hit the load trigger and can proceed normally. Actually, do that regardless.

Watery hall is weird. At least now I know it isn't just me.

Speedrunning times should still be accepted unless you're not using the disc and have unlock read speed. You don't have to worry about that though
The door turns grey like normal, it just never opens.  Yet it will open instantly on the Wii, like it should...

I'll see if I can get a video to show you exactly whats going on
Ok scratch that.  As soon as I load my game, it's crashing now.  Like when you first see Samus after loading your game, it freezes...  :/

Game works fine on Wii, but not on mint condition cube. Hmmmm

Even my cube isn't that crashy. And it didn't work for over 3 years

Do you have any other GC games to try?
Yeah, I've tried F-Zero GX - works flawlessly.  Resident Evil 2 - Works flawlessly.  Starfox Assault - Works flawlessly.
Ok, I played through the game from the start, and recorded a quick video.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/0v3r67u3lc9jcqs/2015-10-22%2014-23-57.mp4?dl=0
So the plot thickens...

I've just tried my disc on a friends gamecube.  His is the same version as mine (DOL-101) except his has a modchip installed.  His also has the same issue.

Out of curiosity though, since he has a modded gamecube, I asked him to burn a copy to a dvd-r and try that.  Guess what - Same issue...  So it's definitely not my disc.

Here is where it gets interesting though.  He downloaded v1.02 (no idea if this is the players choice version or what...) but to my surprise, this version works!  At least on his Gamecube, but I would bet that if mine was modded, it would work on mine too.

So this is where I'm at.  The original US version, doesn't work.  The PAL version, doesn't work.  The US v1.02 seems works fine...

If someone can clarify what this v1.02 is, I will try and source an original copy.

Players Choice
ok great, i'll try and grab one
V1.02 aka player's choice has a lot of sequence breaks and techniques fixed. If you plan on running the game, just get a wii. Otherwise, you're fine to use whatever.

Pretty much this. Easily the most viable way to speedrun this game is to play 0-00 on a Wii. (Or 0-01, but literally nobody has that.)

Though I have a 0-00 copy and I never heard of the specific problem that you are having. When you said he burned a copy, was it your copy he burned?

EDIT: I just checked your first post, everybody speedruns the game on a wii. Assuming you don't mean through an usb loader or something (in which case your times would not be comparable to others), wii is in fact extremely recommended. While I have never seen your problem in particular, the game has known crashes in other places on 0-00 and 0-01 on gamecube. Wii fixes that.

Generally speaking, people don't care if you speedrun a gamecube game on a wii, simply that you are using an actual disc.
If that's the case, then I'll probably just run it on the Wii.  It's the only game I have issues with so its not really a problem.  I'll need to order an RGB scart cable for my Wii though since I'll need to connect it to my CRT (I can't speedrun a game on an LCD, too much input lag)

Thanks for the input though.  The Wii is probably going to be the best option.
Interesting, I wonder if there is a blemish on the disc right where the trigger is supposed to be, have you tried cleaning the disc with rubbing alcohol? Swipe from the inside out, and do not swirl.

If that doesn't work, do you mind using CleanRip and checking the md5sum with a known good one?
The way I understand things, it's the discs fault. 100%.
That certainly seems to be the case.
