I went against my better judgement and got the GBA system pretty much just so I could play this game (well, I'd buy a few others but now I don't have any money).

I take back everything bad I said about it in the past, and now I complain about bomb jumping.  I can't do it.  I did 100% normal, totally fun, so now I want to try 100% hard.  But I don't want to go back up to Brinstar after getting the Hi-Jump just for that one item (which is brutally far...).  The way I see it, there are three options:
1) try bomb jumping until I get it to work
2) collect many items in Norfair on the second run
3) do the standard sequence

Will (2) save me any time?  Obviously (1) is the fastest but I have no desire to do that right now.  Also, will Ridley murder me without Varia?  I had a hard time fighting Kraid (he's never killed me before tonight).

I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
I skipped the Varia in one of my old 100% runs, AJ might've too.  It may be hard to survive in Norfair, but it can be done.

Ridley's not too bad on hard without Varia, you just need to be a bit more careful than you usually are. As for Bomb Jumping, try to find a rythm for the bombs, sometimes counting off in your head helps.

AS for your question about option 2 saving time, I doubt it, in a 100% run it could save a small amount of time, but, for most 100% speed runs use the Kraid without Power Grip route, so you would need to be good at Bomb Jumps.
i agree Hard with out Vara isn't all that hard but i never really tryed 100%.

Well, this isn't a speed run so much as a "can I do this ANY faster than I did it before" thing.  After an enormous number of unsuccessful tries (hot rooms in Norfair) I've decided to short-cut to Ridley, which will make the long run even harder for me, I'm afraid.  Oh well, that's why I'm experimenting, I'll probably never be good enough to speed run this game.  I'm already at 1:09 in Ridley, which is more than half an hour ahead of normal.  I'll pay for it later, I think.

[offtopic]I never noticed the google ads before.  I saw the "Jump Rope" ad and it took me a few minutes to realize that it's on this site because of "speed running."  lol.  I thought distance running was better for your health...[/offtopic]

edit: dang, the missile pack on the right side of ridley is not collectible unless you have the wave beam.  DUH!

If by ahead, you mean faster, than I doubt you'd pay too much for it, in 100% a lot of the trouble is knowing where all the items are.

My final time was 3:12.  I checked out some Norfair rooms after defeating Ridley and the only ones I couldn't get through were the top one (near Ice Beam), the double room after Hi-Jump, and the room with the Super Missile and the Missile in the wall behind.

What really killed my time was going back to Ridley for 1 item.  There's only 1 item to collect in Kraid on the second wind, but it leads to Norfair so...Tourian was also a problem as I absolutely spazzed when I saw all the metroids.

Hard mode was quite a surprise.  I've played SM a lot and am okay at it at this point, and Normal in this game is easy.  But in hard you can't be so foolish with hitting things.  I've never used that first save room in Brinstar until after I got killed by the guy near the Tourian entrance.

Oh, yeah...if you go up to Brinstar, and get the Varia without activating the Chozo Statue, and without the Wave beam, are you messed over by the purple thing in the left room?

If I remember corectly, no.
Simply try using the cheesing strategy on Ridley to get rid of him. Try beating him before Kraid if you find Kraid hard, as you'll enter his room with Super Missiles, which will tear him apart. As for the Bomb Jumping Varia trick, if you want speed, only do it if you're certain you can do it first time, or you'll just end up wasting time. You could just reset though, but it's your choice.
