Nate(and everyone else), definitely keep us up to date on how the Single Player mode is (and how long it is, etc.). It will pretty much be the deciding factor in whether I buy the game or not.
From what opinions of the game I have heard, if your motivation for buying the game is something other than portable multiplayer fragfests, you may be...underwhelmed. Quake done Metroid.
Dunno if that's accurate, though. I haven't "borrowed" the game from anyone yet.
Nope, you find the weapons in the areas as pickups just like in other metroid games. I just got the Judicator after doing a really frustrating morph ball puzzle.
love how people are spewing hearsay when there are people who have the game who are posting in this topic.
Well, if that was directed towards me, my comments above were derived from various opinions of peoples. And yes, they own the game. I've been pretty "meh" about Hunters, though, so I've yet to actively pursue the acquisition of a friend of mine's beloved DS.
But this is what I hear: "Cool...DS wi-fi fragfests. Single-player? Yeah, it's decent. But online is where it's at."
Wheee, I have it and stuff. Haven't played multiplayer because my replacement dongle isn't here yet, plus I'd get flickerbatting owned anyway.
Controls are weirding me out because I've never really PLAYED played a keyboard and mouse FPS. Closest thing is Goldeneye.
Level 1 was pretty dang linear. Going by the manual plus my experience, major items are limited to weapons and expansions. Lots of "key hunting" like in Echoes, but with much less "hunting". Actually, so far the keys seem pointless because the doors lock until you reveal them anyway.
What Nate said is spot on... I ALMOST died on the first level's boss but it decided to cough up several energies on me. It doesn't usually do that. (Heh, was pretty funny tractoring the energy while desperatly not trying to get hit...)
As far as in game story, it's pretty much exactly as in Prime, except occasionally you get little alerts from your ship (mostly along the lines of "some bounty hunter dork landed here, be careful!"). Scan visor is here and works the same as in Prime. A major bother for me is that the major cutscenes (don't worry, about exactly as in Prime, by cutscenes I just mean the whole "OMG ITS A BOSS" thing... think when you meet Thardus or kill OP or something) are prerendered using graphics like a jillion times better than the actual game. I don't like it when "in-line" cutscenes are graphically different from normal ones.
As far as how wi-fi goes... according to the manual, everbody having everyone's friend codes is basically going to be almost the same as having a m2k2 server, except that friends of friends will be getting in too. "Random" games are only normal battle mode... however you can add those players as "rivals" after the game. The only differences between rivals and friends are that a) you can choose to play against just rivals or just friends instead of both and b) only friends are allowed to chat/voice chat with you. So no need to worry about random jerks cussing you out. Friend And Rival games, as far as the manual says, are exactly like local wireless play except you can't have bots. That does mean the game is limited to 4 players... I'm not sure the DS can handle much more anyway.
I have 4 planets unlocked, i'm mostly through the first 3, I took a sidetrip to the 4th one, then ran the hell back. (after unlocking a new hunter and grabbing a new energy tank)
It's far more action based than any previous metroid game, but thats fine by me. The multiplayer (I've only played against bots) has been excellent, despite the massive "getting my ass kicked by level 2 bots", it was extremely fun.
I'm planning on getting much more of it done tonight, but the controls tend to cramp up my hands - my fault i suppose, i'll figure out a way to hold it eventually.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the boost ball needs more visual feedback that you're actually boosting. It doesn't really seem to be doing anything unless you pay close attention to your speed.
And yeah, the map sucks. How does it suck when it's the same as in Prime/Echoes? Is it the no zoom?
You can zoom. Use the L + R buttons. use the stylus to rotate, the control pad to scroll. I think the map is fine. It's a little harder to read with the DS' lower color depth and such, but its just like the Prime 1+2 maps and personally I like it. I dont know why ppl think it starts. The worst thing about it is having to press the start button to view it when you're using stylus mode.
I cant wait for u guys to set up a Hunters section on the site. the structure of the game is going to severely limit sequence breaking, but I'm sure there will be some good content, tips and tricks to post. especially for multiplayer. (the multiplayer advice for echoes ought to be posted in the MP2 section.)
BTW, I'm on the middle of level two now, and while the game is linear, there's also a lot of rooms I'm seeing guarded by special weapon doors. Still don't have a single one, although I've faced two hunters. I'm wondering if you just backtrack to those doors for expansions.
The Judicator is on the ice planet (one of the two unlocked after the third level.) You have to go through a really annoying morph ball puzzle to get it. (Opens purple doors, shoots supercooled plasma)
Yeah, it seems to be lacking a few things. one of the biggest bummers of it all is that the game is so new, and so different from other Metroid games that the common metroid sense isnt always valuable..and nobody out there knows every secret yet, so we're all kind of lost in this confusion together. Its actually kind of neat, like we were all thrown into this world at once and have to figure it out on our own..surprise
Chat can only be used with people on your friends roster (and not rivals roster). Nintendo feels like it needs to "protect" everyone online so they dont want you to chat with people you "dont know". Anyway. You can use voice chat and text chat in the pre-game and post-game lobby screens when you are playing in Friends + Rivals mode (but chatting and talking only works between friends, and not rivals). An icon will appear on the screen in these places to indicate when it's possible. When Voice chat is available, push the X button to activate the mic and start talking. (text messaging is available too).
Fall damage? I suck when fall damage comes into play. Seriously, I'll get this game and earn the nickname 'Splat Aran'. Do you know how much fear has been struck to my heart with this new development?
...but I'm still going to get it. Something to do with loyalty and curiosity and stuff.
