%(letter) symbols are commonly used as placeholders for information in games, and usually in an intentional, valid way.:) For instance in Unreal Tournament, you can make a chat line that you bind to a key that will say the equivalent of "I'm in <location> holding the <weapon> with <ammo> ammo, <health> health and <armor> armor." Each of the things in < > would have its own % symbol that when used places the desired information into your chat string. in MPH they'd appear to be employed in exactly the same fashion but weren't intended to be used by players. (They probably didn't expect people to use symbols much like this)
