And yes, it is possible to defeat mother brain's 1st stage with just 10 missiles and 10 SMs (well, 9 actually).
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Well, you can always beat the Metroids with Power Bombs, and refill at the ship.  This'd be a major pain in the arse in this run, as you'd have to glitch into Tourian every time.  If you DID do it, you'd only need the minimum of items, as you can do the Zebetite glitch, so you only need Missiles for the glass.
Well, the problem with returning to the ship to refuel is that it requires 2 more uses of the space-time beam to do, which resets all the metroids along with everything else.  Having the ice beam does allow me to perform the zebetite glitch though, even without wave beam.  Killing the metroids with power bombs is possible, but I don't think I'd bother since it's much harder.  Right now I'm trying to find a way to bypass MB with space-time, thereby removing the need for the E-tanks & Varia and bringing my % down to 13.  I'm also trying to see if I can skip PBs by getting into Maridia through that one SM gate from the wrong side, but it doesn't look promising.

On a side note, although it isn't very helpful, it's possible to use the space-time beam in conjunction with a power bomb to give MB infinite health.  Not sure why anyone would ever want to.

And has anyone ever noticed that both the space-time and murder beams freeze and then kill anything (particularly things with low health, like rinkas) that come in contact with the point at which it was last used?  This works even if it wasn't used but was just switched out by somersaulting or switching to missiles.  This is really helpful for keeping rinkas off while trying to destroy zebetites or MB, but it only works once.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
You won't get through that gate backwards.  It's been rigorously tested by TASers, as it's the only major thing left that would alter the completion time by a significant amount.  The Green Gate GlitchTM can only be performed on gates with the switch on the left.

You should be fine with the Metroids with a low amount of Missiles.  Use your normal Missiles on them, since you can refill them, and if you do get right out of them, using one Super will no doubt spawn enough stuff to refill anyway.  Also, it sounds obvious, but make sure you return to the Missile refill after killing the eye door.

As for the beams doing Ice damage, you can read a bit about the beams on the TAS page.

You can see the actual damage rates here as well
Does anyone know any way to avoid MB's hyper beam?  That's really what it comes down to at this point, since skipping MB altogether doesn't seem possible via space-time beam.  I've tried hiding behind her (again with space-time), she just teleports me in front of her and then kills me.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
It's a scripted sequence, and the beam doesn't just fire forward, it fires at you and drags you to that position.  You could be anywhere in the room.  If a way to skip her had been discovered, it'd be everywhere.
Well, that's out, since I just realized that removing the varia & E-tanks would make the ice beam inaccessible.  I'm certain that it is possible to bypass MB with the space-time beam, but the only way to find it except by sheer dumb luck is to read the game code, which I have no idea how to do.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I'm fairly certain that with a reasonable amount of health you can obtain the Ice Beam.  The main Norfair shaft isn't heated, so you'd only have to get through four rooms.  The problem with this is that unless you DO find a way to skip MB, then it's pointless, as you need both Suits and three Energy Tanks to survive her beam (for the lowest percentage).
IIRC Gravity doesn't actually do anything to reduce the damage of her beam, so you would only need Varia and three Energy Tanks. And Ice Beam can certainly be gotten with three or less Energy Tanks without Varia. In fact, I know I've done it before.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The Gravity Suit would be skipped anyway, since this run doesn't include beating Phantoon.  Ignore where I mentioned it above.  I think I was having another senior moment.  It doesn't affect the beam at all.
well, if I were to try to obtain the ice beam using a minimum of items, I'd just get the varia suit, but I can't figure out how to get past MB without getting hyperbeamed so that's kind of useless right now.  It's probably possible to get the ice beam with only one E-tank, but I'd rather just get the varia anyway if I'm just going for %.

I know it must be immensely complicated, but is it possible to read the game code and predict what the space-time beam will do?  There has to be an easier way to go about finding out how to skip MB by figuring out what types of blocks the beam will create at what locations.  I suppose it might only work on the emulator, depending on how it handles overflow, but the two or three space-time glitches I've ever used work on the wii as well.  The problem is, I'm not sure how difficult such a prediction would be, or how I would actually read the code.  I'm not exactly a master programmer.

On a separate note, MB hates the space-time beam.  She sometimes goes berserk and runs all the way to the right, killing me in seconds.  It's kinda funny.

Okay, I've decided to go with sheer dumb luck (and probably fairly unhealthy persistence) instead.  I've managed to get properly outside MB's room (I'm in a spot where I run a few screens to the right, then the floor moves up a block, then I run the same distance, it moves up another block, etc., that's what's supposed to happen, right?)  The question now is, how do I get back out?  Is there any way to reenter the world besides using transition blocks?  I can't seem to find any transitions that don't lead to the previous room.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yes, you're doing it right.  The screen shifting up happens when you run to one side.  And no, you cannot enter the world without hitting another transition.
Okay, the whole dumb-luck thing is unimaginably frustrating and ineffective.  Time to go back to the whole systematic approach using external programs (i.e. cheating) idea.  Is there anything out there similar to tileview that actually works on machines that aren't antiques?  Specifically, ones that don't run on DOS?
Not sure if anyone has done this before but we found this funny on stream tonight

He sorta morphed in the middle of running and got the mach ball off it was pretty cool

That was kinda cool, but I'm wondering if the reason we haven't seen it before is because there's no real advantage.....or is there and I'm just missing it?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
It's probably to do with the gate forcing you out to whichever side you push, granting you a little extra speed, and therefore enough speed with a normal morph to roll across the crumble blocks.  Of course, the equipment you have is the same as the normal method, so there's no use for it.
Just had a nice sound glitch occur. I was escaping the double Kago area in lower norfair after killing ridley. Blew the statue clear with the PB and shot the giant hopper above me with a charged shot., and the ensuing creature death explosion sound was louder and more severe than normal. The closest thing to it would be ripping sticky tape off a cardboard box. Or a really nasty fart Razz
I had that happen to me several times before, behemoth. I never thought of it as a glitch, because I know what happens there: The giant hopper got hit by the PB's second blast wave, died, and your charged shot hit the already exploding creature, which results in the blow-up animation resetting, but the explosion sound being written into the sound buffer twice, where they somehow combine to make that noise you heard. This glitch actually works in Metroid 2 as well, you can trigger it by killing a monster with a normal bomb or missile and timing your normal shot so that it hits the explosion. Using bombs makes the timing easier, with a missile it only works by sheer dumb luck. Funny thing is, in Metroid 2 you can actually freeze the explosion if you have Ice beam and the creature you fire at can be frozen with only one shot.
Interesting stuff and sounds pretty logical. I think it had happened to me a few times in the past too, but I never really acknowledged it. This game is full of little sound and graphical glitches that I haven't seen reported by anybody. Simply due to them being too small, unhelpful and insignificant no doubt.

How i can do the "Var Beam" restart glitch on ZSNES?
The Bomb that says it all .!..
I had a wierd one tonight. I was Playing on Zsnes with the timer patched ROM (the one that displays seconds and minutes when you finish).
When I was trying to do the Metroid skip with the refill there was a major type of glitch.

I failed the skip in the way where i think you hold on to the crystal flash too long and you only get only one tank filled.
But after this happened I couldn't move and my beams turned white. No matter what combination i chose, all of the beams where white.

I could shoot missiles, super missiles and use the grappling beam.
I could enter the pause menu and turn equipment on and off.
I could use beam shields.
But I couldn't morph or move.

The only way to get mhyself moving again was to use the x-ray scope and turn around while using it, after I did this I could move and do all things normally, but my beams where still white, until i turned the plasma beam back on and the beam turned back to its green colour.

does anyone have any idea what happened?

At what point during the Metroid skip do you do a crystal flash?
The Bomb that says it all .!..
I damage myself down to 619 health (reserves empty) on the sidehopper. Then when the metroid swoops down you lay the power bomb and when the metroid has drained you down to below 40 health but before it hits 01 health the crystal flash starts and fills you up straight away.

Then off you go without panting on the ground.
Well that's how it's meant to work anyway. It's actually a glitch in itself.
