more like 430 at the current exchange rate, but yeah if that's really going to be the uk retail price then we can expect $400.

the thing is, i don't mind paying that at all if the technology were good enough ... i mean my iphone cost that much, and i expect to buy a new iphone every 2 years, compared to the wii u which will last more like 5 or 6.

the problem is that i don't think the wii u packs enough punch to be worth that price tag. the gamepad has a resistive touch screen for fuck's sake.

for that matter, i don't get why nintendo has such a problem with selling their hardware at a loss. they have the most fervent and devoted fanbase out of everyone and could make a killing on software if only they focused on that. sell it for $300-350, pack in a main series mario game, have a new star fox + pikmin available at launch, have a new zelda and a new ip (just one!) slated for spring 2013, and give people the option to buy these games through a robust download service (to reap maximum profit), they would make a fucking killing.

Doesn't that happen really often with new hardware? I'm pretty sure it's just guesses from the retailers, I mean currently I can preorder a PS4 for 699£ or something at a online store.

I think that this may be the last or second-to-last generation of consoles. The future of gaming will inevitably be digital just like the music industry. I really think that the main motivation behind specializing the hardware is a last ditch effort to push gaming into something that almost has to be played on official hardware, making piracy possible but no longer worth the effort. All it's going to take is one of the major players abandoning the console and the rest will have to follow suit. The question is - who will it be? I doubt Ninty, because they're the ones putting the most effort into stopping it from happening. Will it be Sony or MS?

I disagree. I can't see they'll make any changes when the console gaming market is so huge. I'm sure it wasn't so long ago that somebody was saying it was now bigger than a lot of other forms of entertainment combined.

On the digital distribution side, it'll take a while yet. Until most of the front-line countries have nationwide broadband speeds that can deal with it, then it probably wouldn't be the best move.

Yeah I have to agree with the Digital distribution, its a great model if you know for sure you always have internet but even here in the US there are plenty of places that have terrible or no internet. My previous job's internet would crap out randomly and got only ~50kbps and it was located in a business park. Charter argued that it would cost 9k to dig and route fiber to the parkway...

It makes me wonder about these "always online" games like D3. They seriously are fucking over a ton of people who can't afford a few grand to route a cable line to their house or live in a country where internet isn't widely available. And the real question is why, so you can stomp piracy? You are losing more to lost customers than you ever - theoretically - were to pirates (again we don't even fucking know how many people actually pirate games).

The console market IS huge, but the audience will become even bigger still once they get rid of the consoles. I think it would be awesome, so that people can start focusing on the damn games more and fuck the consoles, or exclusivity for that matter.
