i'd rather see something new though. like, give me something i haven't played before, clearly the guy can make a game so why does he rip off essentially every aspect of metroid?
Probably like everything else - money. Building something you love is one thing, but building something you can to make money to fund the project you love can't hurt either.
no, see, shadow complex takes ideas from metroid and applies them to a futuristic setting with a totally different narrative, etc. it doesn't feel like you're playing a metroid ripoff, it feels like you're playing a cool new game with obvious metroid influence. that's a good thing.
this guy has made a game that literally looks exactly like a metroid game. the tiles look right out of norfair or something.
Well I like metroid, so if it rips of metroid then I'm totally happy about that. I'm really not interested in some kind of credit system for who came up with what idea, I just want to play the game. I'm no more likely to call this game out for ripping off metroid than I would for an actual metroid game ripping off another metroid game.
Ark just gave you an example of a game that copied Metroid without being a straight rip off.
Yes, a lot of game types have been done already at this point but if you're going copy Metroid you should at least make the effort to make the game your own and not literally a recolored Metroid game.
Look at your example of Cave Story, I don't really like the game that much, but it always felt like Cave Story. I didn't wander into a room and think "Man that's just like that one thing in Metroid!" Where as when I saw the sequence in the trailer that had the screen shot ark posted I immediately thought "Oh look the Morphball room from Metroid." That's dumb.
Maybe the game isn't just a Metroid rip, but based on the trailer that's what you're supposed to see it as and that sure as hell isn't going to make me want to play it. I can already play several versions of that game that I know aren't crap.
People, including me, shit on Nintendo for making the same game over and over, just because it's an "indie" developer doesn't make them immune from that criticism if they go out and make the same game Nintendo's been spitting out for years.
Also when the player character was described as "Quirky" I knew I was done with that game.
think maybe this is related to why i don't enjoy fanart
some people look at something like this and go, "hey, this guy made a game that's practically a metroid game. isn't that awesome??!?!?!?!?". i can kind of understand where these people are coming from, they want more of what they enjoy; it doesn't matter who makes it. these are the same people who look at fanart and think it's great.
