XIII gets a lot of hate but I rather like it for the same reasons most people don't - that is, it's more of an interactive action sequence than a typical RPG. I never finished it because it gets grindy quite abruptly at a certain point, but I quite liked it compared with the other FF titles I've tried.
Well, I don't know that I'd say the story is my favorite ever, but it's another element of the game that I think is better than most people do.
Chrono Trigger is decent. Really enjoyed the Double/Triple Techs, good soundtrack. The thing that killed it for me was what ends up killing most JRPGs - the grindy, tedious endgame.
well it's just over the top in a good way. of course it's not over the top according to its japanese writers, but we perceive it that way and it's awesome
i can really get into some of the lamest rpg stories, like tales of symphonia

CT has like zero grinding, though.
I guess I'm doing the end wrong, then. Like, confronting the floating palace thingy or whatever. The very first battle you fight when you get inside is just
.____.
Maybe it bothers me even more when a game isn't grindy for most of it then suddenly becomes grindy farther in. Probably because that builds up my hopes.
My roommate would probably refuse to buy it because of the Lufia vs. Chrono Trigger debate (in which he sides with the former) and I'm too cheap to get it myself. Otherwise I might've tried it again by now.
