*Makes infinite money from all the idiot whiny tourney nerds who keep giving me money despite complaining about how bad my game is*
This is what I don't get. Surely the man-on-the-street fighting game player doesn't care if Ken's fireball goes 1/2 a second slower than Ryu's? How can they financially sustain all the rereleases when only the leet tournament players give a shit?
fighting games are just so lost on me. The only fighting game I think I've ever found to be "fun" is the super smash bros series, since you can dick around with friends in it and have fun doing whatever.
With all those Tekkens and Street Fighters and mortal kombats and other stuff it's always just 1 vs 1, standing really close together, mashing shit like crazy.
Tekken is the kind of game where, after a few hours, a load of drunk guys can figure out what patterns in the mashing works to beat their fellow drunk guys. That is why Tekken is amazing.

You can do this with more traditional fighting games too, just don't tell the internet you are or you'll be called a babby little funhaver and shamed forever.
Alternatively just don't talk to fighting game fans ever because they are insufferable. They are like the stereotypical high school jock except they don't realize that they are actually sad nerds like everyone else and have no possible reason hold any sense of superiority. Jocks can at least shove a skinny nerd in a locker.
i like playing a good shmup on occasion - good shmups are fun because of their challenge, unlike most challenging games. they're almost like puzzle games in that you have to figure out a way to navigate through the bullets.
i just don't get how people can play dozens of them, obsessing over each new release. they're all pretty much the same thing.
that's a run and gun. what tbob posted is what "shmup" commonly refers to. and yep, many of them have anime chicks for no reason other than fan appeal.
