it's all about form, man ... EXPRESSION.
I'm so sick of the "video games are art" argument. Who gives a flying fuck?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
The only people in the game industry that consider themselves artists are tools like the Braid guy.

like i said, there's several great voice actors who do lots of games work, but it's still nowhere near as big as other forms

Not really, at this point you are getting a lot of veteran professional VAs, I mean Nintendo doesn't but they're way behind everyone else in putting voice acting in games anyway. Honestly it seems like the biggest problems are direction and the weird structure of video game recording.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
The people that want games to be considered art are just dumbass gamers who want to feel like their hobby is special compared to everyone elses's hobbies.
red chamber dream
yeah, but the veteran professionals do stuff like gears of war and uncharted (both of which have good voice acting btw), so maybe it's just that rpg localization doesn't have the kind of budget here
red chamber dream
and of course they're art if people call them art but i swear to god i'm not going to argue the fact
Or it could be just another anti-dub jerkoff who thinks English sucks.
red chamber dream
well, i'd take a jap track over an english one any day for a jrpg
Yeah... no thanks.
red chamber dream
see that's the thing, the japanese just sounds better because it's what i associate with that sort of storytelling
red chamber dream
and the acting itself is much much better, it's more dramatic i think in a way that wouldn't be appropriate in english

I can't tell the difference tbh. A side from one have obnoxiously squeaky voices for any female character under 18. And that's all of the characters in a JRPG.

I'm still debating whether Sakmoto's approach to Other M's VA is the standard or not. :v

Then again Deadly Premonition actually was largely ok if not amazing VAwise nd that game was made on like a $2 budget so who fucking knows.
I don't know. I usually prefer English dubs because they usually have a better variety of voices used to different characters. Japanese VAs just seem to have these specific types of voices for certain characters that just get recycled over and over.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
That's how Japanese people sound you racist!!!
red chamber dream
well, you're right lol

i think it's really hard for a native english speaker to judge if they aren't familiar with japanese accents and culture
red chamber dream
whereas non-english speaking countries don't have as much trouble with our language because they've likely been growing up listening to it (or speaking it!) all their life
One shall stand, one shall ball.
To be completely honest the language largely sounds unpleasant to me. One of the few I've heard that actually bothers me a little, I'm not sure why.
I seriously doubt the content of the average Tales story is all that Japanese-y.
red chamber dream
granted, they mostly get the generic eastern accent, but still
One shall stand, one shall ball.
The average Tales story is literally anime, dude.
red chamber dream
i suppose, but i'm quite enjoying graces's story atm
Maybe in terms of presentation, but I doubt the main themes in them are so Japanese that the average baka gaijin wouldn't get them.
I mean, Atlus made the scripts in Persona games pretty decent, and those games are WAY more Japanese than Tales.
red chamber dream
it's not very original and not exceptional at all, but it's fun and entertaining enough to drive you along, and the characters are all decent (some of the dialog quite hilarious actually), and it all complements the gameplay and art, both of which are a+.

so i dunno, i don't really have a problem with it i guess. i kind of like a nice breezy jrpg story once in a while.
