The only people in the game industry that consider themselves artists are tools like the Braid guy.

like i said, there's several great voice actors who do lots of games work, but it's still nowhere near as big as other forms
Not really, at this point you are getting a lot of veteran professional VAs, I mean Nintendo doesn't but they're way behind everyone else in putting voice acting in games anyway. Honestly it seems like the biggest problems are direction and the weird structure of video game recording.
The people that want games to be considered art are just dumbass gamers who want to feel like their hobby is special compared to everyone elses's hobbies.
yeah, but the veteran professionals do stuff like gears of war and uncharted (both of which have good voice acting btw), so maybe it's just that rpg localization doesn't have the kind of budget here
I can't tell the difference tbh. A side from one have obnoxiously squeaky voices for any female character under 18. And that's all of the characters in a JRPG.

I'm still debating whether Sakmoto's approach to Other M's VA is the standard or not. :v
Then again Deadly Premonition actually was largely ok if not amazing VAwise nd that game was made on like a $2 budget so who fucking knows.
I don't know. I usually prefer English dubs because they usually have a better variety of voices used to different characters. Japanese VAs just seem to have these specific types of voices for certain characters that just get recycled over and over.
whereas non-english speaking countries don't have as much trouble with our language because they've likely been growing up listening to it (or speaking it!) all their life
it's not very original and not exceptional at all, but it's fun and entertaining enough to drive you along, and the characters are all decent (some of the dialog quite hilarious actually), and it all complements the gameplay and art, both of which are a+.
so i dunno, i don't really have a problem with it i guess. i kind of like a nice breezy jrpg story once in a while.
