Anyone played Splinter Cell: Conviction? That one's a classic for me.
red chamber dream
huh, never knew that devil may cry was originally going to be re4
Well, did RE4 go through like 3 different concept builds before the developers settled on the final version?
Even the demo disc of the game had some pretty noticeable differences from the release version, like having a listed inventory instead of the interactive case and having the knife as a separate weapon rather than something you can use just by holding L.
red chamber dream
yeah it did, the first concept they came up with is apparently what became dmc

lol why does this site exist again?

kotaku is a giant fucking joke
And an unfunny one at that.

normally i wouldn't click but i couldn't resist ... okay, so people do realize that jrpg voice acting doesn't HAVE to be bad, right? the reason it so often sucks is that english actors "have" to match up with the characters' lips, which, due to the huge differences between japanese and english, means you wind up with all these weird pauses and stretched out syllables and all kinds of dumb shit.

on the other hand, the japanese voice acting is generally great. but it's obscenely expensive to put the japanese voice track in international releases because of all the royalties japanese voice actors get paid.

ok, so how do we solve this? couple options:

a) forget about lip syncing entirely (probably won't happen because publishers think people care about that).

b) programmatically change the movement of the lips depending on the language. a lot of work, sure, but it's much less expensive than paying out multiple royalties per actor.

c) just wait until the american games industry catches up to japan in terms of getting top-notch voice talent and paying them royalties. there are several very good voice actors who do lots of games, but in general it's not as highly sought-after by the good actors because it's a lot of work and doesn't pay as much as, say, a cartoon where you get royalties.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I like how part of the argument is that without voice actors writers are free to write dialogue that doesn't sound like how anyone ever talks. Because shitty writing's okay I guess.

well, there's also the whole cultural thing where something that sounds lame in english doesn't sound lame in japanese, so there's no way to translate it without it sounding, well ... lame
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Also it's not like Western games are all perfectly acted either. The medium in general is still learning about how voice acting. casting and direction work.
red chamber dream
yeah exactly ... and also royalties
One shall stand, one shall ball.

That's why anyone who knows anything localizes.
red chamber dream
yeah but i mean even after localization
red chamber dream
but royalties are the biggest thing really, if american companies started paying them (and they will, eventually) they'll start getting the kind of talent cartoons get

Hey, having poor lip synching sucks. MGS2 and 3 had it sometimes and it looked pretty awkward. The worst game I've seen in that regard, though is Xenogears. Ugh...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
They actually do get some of those. Steve Blum is in literally every game for example.

like i said, there's several great voice actors who do lots of games work, but it's still nowhere near as big as other forms

nah it can be done a lot of it is a case of the creator not really getting that his idea doesn't quite translate and forcing it. Some event scan seem a bit weird still though, yeah.
red chamber dream
well, i'm not sure japanese game creators give a shit what bizarre white aliens from other countries think about the stories they write
red chamber dream
and i'm not sure they should
Unless their games sell more abroad.
I'll admit that's not usually the case.

but artists don't care about money right??????????????
